구원 실재에 참여로서의 세례의 회복 문제

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본고는 세례의 초기교회적 의미를 현대교회의 맥락에서 회복하는 문제를 다룬다. 본고는 이 주제가 고대교회 의 구원론과 현대교회의 구원론 사이의 괴리와 연결된 문제임을 보여 준다. 즉 세례를 어떻게 이해하느냐의 문 제는 현대교회가 가벼이 여기는 한갓 의례관련 문제만이 아니라 기독교 신학의 대들보에 해당하는 주제에 불 가피한 영향을 미치는 문제라는 것이다. 신약성경과 초기교회 전통은 구원을 세례와 분리시켜 생각하지 않았 다는 것이 명백하며 이 전통은 중세는 물론 종교개혁에도 이어졌다. 구원과 세례의 고대적 연결이란 구원을 세 례를 통해 주어지는 것, 다시 말해 세례가 드러내는 특별한 조건에 의해 참여되는 것으로 이해했다는 것을 의 미한다. 필자는 세례가 드러내는 특별한 구원의 조건을 자연성과 초자연성의 만남과 연합으로 본다. 즉 구원은 자연적인 것(물질과 몸)과 초자연적인 것(영적 및 신적인 것)이 실재적으로 연합에 참여하는 것이란 것이다. 세례는 이 같은 구원의 조건과 실재를 단순한 말보다 더 포괄적이고 실질적으로 드러내며 그렇기 때문에 또한 구원의 실재에 말보다 더 전인적이고 실질적으로 참여케 하는 수단이 되는 것이다. 그러나 현대에 이르러 세례는 사실상 구원과 무관한 전통적 의례로 전락하였다. 자유주의 진영에서는 구원의 초자연적 실재를 인정하지 않는 신학적 맥락에서 그렇고, 복음주의 진영에서는 구원의 초자연적 실재를 인정 하지만 그 실현의 현실적 맥락으로서의 자연성의 역할을 무시하기 때문에 그렇다. 즉 양쪽 모두에서 세례가 구 원의 실재에 참여하는 수단으로서 인정되지 못하는 것은 단지 세례 예식의 이해 문제만이 아니라 보다 심각한 구원의 이해에 대한 현대적 이해의 오류를 반영한다는 것이다. 필자는 이 같은 현대적 오류의 배후에 근대주의 적 발상과 영향이 있음을 본다. 즉 초자연성을 거부하는 자연주의적 발상과 교회의 우주적이고 실재적인 차원 을 무시하는 주관적 개인주의의 경향이다. 이에 대한 치유책은 세례를 구원의 실재에 참여하는 수단으로 보는 고대교회의 이해와 실천을 회복하는 데서 찾을 수 있음을 필자는 주장한다. 신학적 오류에 의해 본래의 의미와 역할을 상실한 의례적 형식이지만 왜곡된 신학을 바로 잡기 위해 의례적 형식의 본래적 의도의 이해와 실천을 회복해야 한다는 것이다. 특히 고대적 세례교육과정의 회복과 세례식에서 침수례(immersion)와 거절(apotaxis)-귀속(syntaxis)의 의례를 회복시킬 것을 필자는 권장한다. 요컨대 기도의 법(lex orandi)을 무 시한 믿음의 법(lex credendi)의 왜곡을 기도의 법의 회복을 통해 바로 잡을 필요를 본고는 제안하는 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The article treats the matter of restoring the early church’s baptismal meaning in our contemporary contexts. It shows that this subject is related to the estrangement between the ancient church’s soteriology and the modern one. That is, the matter of how to understand baptism is not a mere ritualistic problem, of which the modern church does not make much, but a more significant one to inevitably influence a mainstay-level subject of Christian theology. It is apparent that the New Testament and the early church tradition did not consider salvation and baptism separately from each other, and the tradition continued not only in the middle age but also in the Reformation period. The ancient connection of salvation and baptism meant that salvation is given through baptism, in other words, taken part in by meeting the special conditions revealed through baptism. The author views that the special condition revealed through baptism is the encounter and union between the natural and the supernatural. That is, salvation is to participate in the realistic dimension of the union between the natural (matter and body) and the supernatural (the spiritual and the divine). Baptism is a means to disclose the salvific condition and reality in more comprehensive and substantial mode than mere verbal words and so to help participate in the salvific reality in more wholesome and substantial mode than mere words. But baptism has fallen into an insignificant traditional ritual, in fact, unrelated to salvation in the modern era. On the one hand, the liberal camps receive and interpret baptism into the non-traditional theological views, which do not acknowledge the supernatural reality of salvation, and on the other, the evangelical camps, while acknowledging the supernatural reality of salvation, ignore the role of the natural as the actual context. That baptism is not accepted as means to participate in the salvific reality does not imply a mere ritualistic problem of baptismal ceremony but a more serious problem of a modern distorted understanding of salvation. The author observes a modernistic view and influence in the background of that contemporary fallacy. This is the naturalistic view, which denies the supernatural, and subjective individualism, which ignores the universal and realistic dimension of the church. The curing method for it is, the author claims, found in restoring the ancient understanding and practice that regards baptism as means to participate in the reality of salvation. While theological fallacies distort the original meaning and role of the ritual form, the repair of distorted theology is possible by restoring the proper understanding and practice of that ritual form. Especially, the restoration of the ancient catechetical process and the practice of immersion and renunciation-submission (apotaxis-syntaxis) is recommended. In sum, the article suggests that the distortion of the law of faith (lex credendi) through ignoring the law of prayer (lex orandi) should be repaired by the restoration of the law of prayer in terms of the latter’s legitimate understanding and practising.
