생상의 《동물의 사육제》 분석 및 감상지도안 연구 = An Analysis of Le Carnival des Animaux by Saint-Saens and a Teaching Plan for Music Appreciation Class

In this thesis, Le Carnival des Animaux by Saint-Saens (C. Camille Saint-Saens, 1836-1921) was analyzed and the teaching plan for music appreciation class was built according to the analysis. The purpose of this study is to help the music teachers of seventh-grade-students to effectively teach music appreciation class and to train the students` ears for successful music listening. Le Carnival des Animaux was selected for this study because it is appropriate for the music appreciation class since each piece of the work represents the image of many animals in various musical languages. This work, which is program music, is a collection of 14 pieces and each piece can be learned individually or collectively. In addition, since it is animal characters, the work is suitable for students to do physical movement expressing their feelings while they listen to the piece. This research is composed of theoretical background, music analysis and the teaching plan for music appreciation class. In the theoretical background, the opinions of theorists related to teaching music appreciation classes were reviewed. This section includes the appropriate method, importance, evaluation, and teaching stages of music appreciation class. In the music analysis section, the form, subject melody, harmony, use of scales, and symbolic or descriptive elements of the characteristics of each animal in Le Carnival des Animaux were discussed. In the last section, the teaching plan based on the analysis of the work was presented. In the teaching plan, four teaching materials were suggested in order to motivate student`s music listening and succesfully organize the class. The materials are checklists, theme charts, call charts and test charts. The checklist is divided into a timbre checklist which distinguishes the timbres of various musical instruments and an adjective checklist which checks the adjectives which describes the mood of music. This allows students to easily observe musical responses by letting them expressly show their vague impressions and thoughts. Theme chart, which is the picture or scores of the subject of music, helps students to know in advance the main melodies. Call Chart is a chart which presents musical characters (rhythm, melody, timbre, strength and structure) in pictures or scores. By using call charts in appreciation classes, it has the advantage of letting students see the contents of the music they are listening to in detail. It also has the advantage of enabling students listen following the music since students can maintain their concentration. Test chart allows to develop the ability to identify musical elements by adequately answering the questions after listening to music trying to lead to an active listening.
