Homo Ludens represents "Man the Player" (alternatively, "Playing Man") is a book written in 1938 by Dutch historian, cultural theorist and professor Johan Huizinga. It discusses the importance of the play element of culture and society. Huizinga uses the term "Play Theory" within the book to define the conceptual space in which play occurs. Huizinga suggests that play is primary to, and is a necessary (though not sufficient) condition of the generation of culture.
This study is about public facilities of Rome including new towns in Roman Empire constructed after the Rome. Urban structure of Rome was completely different from that of Egypt. Roman urban space was dynamic one concretizing dimensions of the time while that of Egyptian was static one symbolizing eternity of time. Public facilities like colosseum, amphitheater, circus and public bath show that their only purpose is to serve Romans for their play. These facilities have been carefully manipulated to enhance public enthusiasm of the contest known as "ludi". Ironically enough public bath a place to wash body (for Romans their body was their temple) was inevitable place to keep colosseum and circus. Colosseum was a place for agon, circus for mimicry and exactly public bath was on the antipode.
Nothing is new about Romans enjoyed the play, but in this article I have tried to figure out the meaning of Roman public facilities built to house tens of thousands of people thus every Roman from citizen to slave to enjoy the show. Public facilities represent the ideal of the society to pursue. Romans invested enormous energy and resources to keep the Empire to run its play. These incessant contests and plays that requires ridiculous resources eventually lead the Empire to collapse from the inside.
