Thanks to the development of the Internet and social networking service (SNS), communication between people around the world has become easy without temporal and spatial constraints through the medium of the web. The ability to discover one's own aptitudes or strengths and brand oneself according to these changes of the times is a powerful competitive advantage. The free semester system, which was first introduced to the junior high school curriculum in 2016, focuses on providing students with experiential opportunities to discover their aptitudes and talents and explore their futures. This means that art education should be able to consider the current situation of the times and reflect social needs beyond the intrinsic value of fostering creativity or aesthetic discernment.
This study evaluated an art class teaching method using a brand logo design that would help seventh graders properly explore their aptitudes and careers in line with the purpose of the free semester system. The subjects of this study were five middle school classes (140 students) in Jeju, South Korea. This study planned three lessons that allowed students to complete their own brand logos according to individual interests and aptitudes by collecting student opinions through a survey and incorporating the survey results into the lesson program. The class was created by reorganizing the existing art classes based on the 2015 revised art textbook analysis to enable student-customized classes by combining the design process used in practice with a creative problem-solving model. In terms of the content of the class, this study first laid the foundation for a conceptual understanding of brand and logo design and then allowed students to embody their identities into brands through step-by-step activity materials so that they could design their own brands and logos. This study helped students build frameworks effectively by providing customized feedback based on students' achievements at each class.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, a brand logo design class could promote students' voluntary activities because the educational contents of brand logo design classes were based on students' interests and needs, Even students not interested in art could easily approach it because logo design is a relatively simple form of art. This led to an overall increase in interest in art classes.
Second, the process of designing a brand could provide an opportunity for self-exploration and career exploration, emphasized in the free semester system. Students could recognize the need for self-understanding and proactively explore their career path and aptitude while designing the field of the brand that they wanted to create.
Third, the teacher could inspire learners' motivation to learn by providing personalized feedback on learners' performance on a time-to-time basis. The teacher could identify learners' diverse abilities, interests, and personalities through learners' class outputs and help them grow qualitatively in their learning by providing feedback that took into account individual characteristics based on this.
Fourth, the brand logo design class helped students develop real-world problem-solving skills by applying the needs and demands of the changing society. Since it reorganized the logo design process conducted in companies into an art curriculum, students could understand the concepts and principles of brand and logo design and develop practical skills to apply them to their own designs.
In conclusion, the brand logo design class fosters the ability to express creatively, which is an essential goal of art classes, and is consistent with the purposes of the free semester system, such as self-exploration, career exploration, customized course-based assessment, and student-centered self-directed learning. I look forward to seeing more studies on various art education that can be of practical help to a large number of students by reflecting the trend of the times, in addition to the brand logo design class.
