The purpose of this dissertation is to examine how the suffering of God―one of important issues in modern theology―has been developed in Luther's theologia crucis. and how Moltmann's theology of the cross has been developed in reference to Luther's theologia crucis. It will be made explicit that Luther's theologia crucis is the principle that knowledge of God's true identity comes only from our redeemer and more precisely His saving relationship to us in the suffering and cross of Jesus Christ. Luther's theologia crucis opens up attack upon the understanding that only the humanity of Christ suffers on the cross, while Christ's divine nature is untouched. For Luther the nature of God is unveiled on the cross What is the manner in which the suffering of God has been developed in Luther's theologia crucis? In order to answer this question, This study circulated around three constituents of Luther's Theology-Christology, soteriology, and Trinity-to see how each of them established the assertion that God suffers.First, for Luther Christology established the assertion that God suffers. God suffers on the cross in oneness with the person of Jesus Christ who is ontologically constitutive of God. The suffering of christ as God's own suffering is established in the concrete unity of Christ's personal identity, which is to be explained according to the old doctrine of the communicatio idiomatumSecond, for Luther soteriology established the assertion that God suffers. Luther understood the person of Jesus Christ primarily in terms of what He does pro nobis as our redeemer This means that his doctrine of the Incarnation is conceived in terms of the passion and death of Jesus. The divine suffering which god undergoes is consequent upon God's becoming a human sinner and dying for us on the cross, according to which only the Son dies. This understanding of God's suffering may be called 'expiatory suffering'. Third, for Luther Trinity established the assertion that God suffers. Luther rejected a modalistic version of patripassianism, emphasizing the fact that It is the Son, Jesus of Nazareth, who suffers dying on the cross, not the Father. However, Luther can speak of the Father's 'fellow-suffering' with the Son. For Luther, by way of perichoresis, the Father is said to suffer with the Son through their divine unity. Since the redemptive 'act' of the suffering Christ is integral to the one undivided 'essence' of God, the suffering of christ touches the ummanent Trinity as well as the economic Trinity Accepting Luther's this thought, Moltmann, one of excellent interpretators of Luther's theologia crucis in 20th century, also tries to consider that the idea of God derives only from Jesus Christ, especially his cross event. Moltmann, who received a hint from Luther's theology of the cross, overcome the various limitations of Luther's theology, and developed his own particular theology of the cross. First, Moltmann interprets the Cross as a trinitarian event. Luther's christology of the crucified God remains within the framework of the early church's doctrine of two natures. But according to Moltmann, the cross of jesus is understood as an event between the Father and the Son and the Spirit. Father who abandons the son and delivers the son on the Cross suffers the death of the Son in the infinite the spirit of love. If God's being lay the event of cross concerned with a relationship between the Father and the Son and the Spirit. That God is God of the cross, God of Trinity.Secondly, Moltmann interprets the Cross as soteriological event. The Lutheran theology of the Reformation period understood the justification of the sinner too narrowly as the forgiveness of sins, but not as new life in righteousness. But according to Moltmann, the meaning of the salvation by Jesus is not only the justification of sinners. It is the freedom of death and the completion of new creation. Justification is not a unique event, pin-pointed to a certain moment in time. It is a process which beings in the individual heart throught faith, and leads to the just new world. Thirdly, Moltmann interprets the Cross as a the political event. Moltmann asserts that Luther did not formulate his theologia crucis as social criticism against feudal society in the Peasant Wars. But according to Moltmann, the death of Christ was the death of a political offender. Therefore, Christians establish a startling point and a standard for their political act based on the political event of Jesus on the cross. The crucified God is in fact a stateless and classless God. But that does not mean that he is an unpolitical God. He is the God of the poor, the oppressed and the humiliated. Fourthly, Moltmann assert that the cross on universal significance. Luther's theology of the cross was formed from the concern on the matter of the salvation of human being. As the result, It did nothing but weakened the universal horizon of the justification of God. But according to Moltmann, Jesus died the death of all living things. That is, he did not only die the death of the sinner or merely his own natural death. He died in solidarity with the whole sighing creation, human and non-human- the creation that sighs because it is subject to transience. The salvation by Jesus has brought to the salvation of men and women, or merely to the salvation of their souls. Rather, this should be recognized as a universal salvation. the Christ's resurrection should be also understood as the new creation of the world. Therefore, the christ is cosmic christ.
