The focus of this study is to investigate the effect of classes using mathematics notes based on the Cornell-note method on the mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics learning attitude of elementary school students. To carry out this research, the following research problems were set.
First, what is the effect of classes using mathematics notes based on Cornell-note method on mathematics self-efficacy of elementary school students?
Second, what is the effect of classes using mathematics notes based on Cornell-note method on mathematics learning attitude of elementary school students?
In order to investigate this study problem the following study was carried out. In order to measure study achievement, mathematics self-efficacy, mathematics learning attitude of students, 23 students statistically identified as a homogeneous groups and 23 students set as a comparative group were selected, and an experiment was carried out from mid-September to early November, 2014. Before the experiment, an orientation was held in advance to provide guidance on the purpose of study and the classes using mathematics notes.
This research selected content from the problems in both two units set in the mathematics book and mathematics studying book of the 6th grade 2nd semester measurement area to make up a mathematics note, and designed classes based on this content. The mathematics note was based on Cornell-note method which divides the note into clue column, content column, summary column, and the researcher designed the mathematics note adding the column 'Solve once again' and 'Teacher's opinion' in order to convey the characteristics of the current math course. Classes using the mathematics note was formed as lessons of 17 occasions carried out for 6 weeks. During the experiment period the learning progress of the experimental group and comparative group was set and maintained at the same speed and the ex ante-ex post tests of the experimental group and comparative group were carried out on the same date.
The tests tools utilized in this research are pre study achievement test, ex ante-ex post mathematics self-efficacy test, ex ante-ex post mathematics learning attitude test, prior survey on the perception on mathematics notes targeting the experimental group, and post survey on the impressions and thoughts on using mathematics notes. An additional reliability test was not carried out in measuring study achievement and in the survey, and in order to verify the statistical homogeneity of students and effect of classes using study notes on the mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics learning attitude, the test results of study achievement, mathematics self-efficacy, and mathematics learning attitude were investigated through t-verification at significance level of less than 5%, after statistical processing which utilizes SPSS 12.0 Windows programme.
The research result obtained is as the following.
First, classes using mathematics notes had a positive effect on the mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics learning attitude of elementary school students. The result of the experiment was that there was a meaningful distinction in the mathematics self-efficacy of two groups at a significance level lower than 5%(p=0.005). Among detail factors it was shown that there is an effect at significance level lower than 5% related to mathematics challenge difficulty preference factor(p=0.003) and mathematics confidence factor(p=0.014). Regarding mathematics self-regulation self-efficacy factor there was no meaningful statistical distinction shown.
Second, classes using mathematics notes had a positive effect on the change of learning attitude of 6th grade elementary school students. As the result of experiment it was shown that the learning attitude of two group showed a meaningful distinction at significance level lower than 5%(p=0.002).
Within subordinate factors there was no statistically meaningful result regarding self-confidence and sense of superiority which are subordinate factors of self-conception to the course, however regarding the interest factor (p=0.000) and purpose awareness factor(p=0.000) which are subordinate concepts of attitude on curriculum, a meaningful distinction was shown at significance level lower than 5%. As a result of the experiment, there was no meaningful effect of mathematics classes using mathematics notes on the self-learning field area among study habits field, however looking at learning technique application factor(p=0.001) a meaningful distinction was shown at significance level lower than 5%.
Third, at first there were some students facing difficultly in participating in classes using mathematics notes however as lessons proceeded they became used to and proficient at keeping mathematics notes and experienced help in solving mathematics problems. More success was able to be experienced regarding problem solving, less mistakes were made, and there was an increase in the level of students that experience an increase of mathematics study achievement. Through this students were able to check again the positive role of mathematics notes, and not only were their interest and purpose awareness of mathematics class increased, but they answered that it was helpful in decreasing the compulsion and anxiety related to mathematics. Furthermore, students perceived classes using mathematics notes as more effective than classes that only use mathematics textbooks and studying books, and more than half of the students wished to continue to use mathematics notes in mathematics classes.
To sum up the research results, it can be said that classes using mathematics notes base on Cornell-note method has had a meaningful and positive effect on improving both the mathematics self-efficacy and mathematics learning attitude of 6th grade elementary school students measurement area. Through using mathematics notes, students were able to learn studying techniques needed for
