The purpose of this study is to develop and apply STEAM programs that allow elementary students to express creativity and participate in classes independently, and to analyze the characteristics of creativity, creative problem-solving skills, and the impact of STEAM details on students.
To this end, the activities were reorganized so that students could participate in the 6th grade "Energy and Life" unit in the existing curriculum on their own to acquire various skills and knowledge and come up with various ideas. The theme of the program was 'Making a Product Using Solar Energy' in consideration of the level, interest, relevance to real life, and characteristics of STEAM education, and the STEAM program was developed and applied. The subjects of the study were 24 sixth graders (10 males and 14 females) at D Elementary School in Seoul.
The results of this study are as follows.
First, students showed that the creativity they often use in solving problems varies from individual to individual, but there is an element of creativity that they use remarkably often at each stage of problem-solving. In the stage of understanding a problem, sophistication was most frequently used to interpret the problem and explore a given situation and condition in several ways. Fluency, flexibility, originality, and sophistication were all needed in the planning stage of problem-solving, and fluency and flexibility were strongly expressed while making with materials in the process of problem-solving. In the resultant stage of problem-solving, originality and sophistication were remarkable.
Second, it was shown that the detailed elements of the STEAM applied to the STEAM program can have a positive effect on students' creative thinking and self-management skills. In the course of class, students showed repeated success experiences in interest, curiosity and fun, free imagination, and self-directed learning. In each stage, students showed high interest in science classes (self-management skills), and in the creative design stage, self-management skills such as active participation, self-directedness, satisfaction, and creative thinking skills such as original ideas and fluency were prominent. Finally, in the emotional experience stage, self-management capabilities such as students' experience of success and a new sense of challenge appeared.
Based on the results of this study, it was found that in order to express and develop the creativity of the upper grades of elementary school, teachers' questions and class contents should be constructed at each stage of problem-solving. In addition, it was also confirmed through research that detailed elements of STEAM can have a positive effect on students. These results can be said to show the possibility that the 'STEAM program using solar energy' used in this study can be applied as a new teaching method in regular subjects.
