청소년소설에 나타난 하마르티아와 플롯 간 상관관계 고찰 -『훌훌』과『유원』을 중심으로 - = A Study on the Correlation between Hamartia and Plot in young adult novel - Focusing on 『Hulhul』 and 『Youwon』-

In young adult novels, the character's personality and circumstances have a significant impact on the conflict and development of the story. The conflict encountered by the main character and the process of conflict resolution serves as a core plot that leads to growth. In particular, in Aristotle's Poetics, 'Hamartia', which refers to the main character's mistakes or flaws, functions as a major cause of conflict. This paper studies the correlation between hamartia and plot in young adult novels.
Recently, across young adult novels, there have been many cases where the main character experiences conflict because of external conditions that were not caused by the main character, such as the secret of birth, poverty, and family history. The concept of Hamartia provides a useful framework for analyzing such conflicts, and guide the reader through the process through in which a character recognizes conflict through the plot, experiences reversal and compassion, and provides catharsis to reader.
The young adult novels Hulhul and Youwon show contrasting ways of seeking resolution to conflict and hamartia. Hulhul uses the plot of a traditional tragedy to show the story of the protagonist Seo Yuri accepting her past and recognizes the value of her non-blood family while experiencing relational conflict caused by the death of her parents and adoption. This work has a structure that moves toward recognition and reversal during the conflict with the hamartia of external conditions, providing the reader with emotions of compassion.
On the other hand, Youwon, tells her story of losting her sister in an apartment fire and surviving. The protagonist Youwon remained in the identity of a 'blanket baby' who reminds others that her survival was caused by the sacrifices of others. She discovers her own subjective identity with the help of a friend. Through her awakening to break away from her existing identity, she escapes her tragic past and gains subjective power. This work shows a way of transforming a narrative originating from external factors into a plot of internal growth. In this way, the hamartia that the protagonist possesses in young adult novels can form a connection with the plot and show various directions of growth.
