I. Purpose
I scrutinized formation and development process of the SI-GANG-WON (a government agency for education of the crown prince). from the viewpoint of the crown prince's education in the Chosun dynasty, investigated, in the modern sense, the purpose of the monarchial ethics from the confucism philosophy, the education contents from the YE-HAK-JEOL-MOK (educational curricula for the crown prince), and the education method from the instruction regulations, and observed the system of the KYUNG-YOUN (lecturing of the Monarchial Ethics), and the JONG-HAK (Royal Education). All these activities have been a part of effort to find a modern sense from the education system that had performed over the crown princes from foetushood upto schoolage. through the education system of the SI-GANG- WON.
II. Contents
Dividing the historical background of the crown education into three separate eras of the Three Kingdom era, the Koryo dynasty and the Chosun dyn asty, investigated the historic records of ;
1. Sam Kuk-Saki (The History of the Three Kingdom Era)
2. Koryo Sahjeolyo (The Summarized History of the Koryo Dynasty), and
3. Chosun Wangcho-Sillok (The History of the Chosun Dynasty). and concerning the crown education in the Chosun dynasty, I
1. reviewed the breeding of the crown prince from the birth.
2. investigated the KANG-HAK (an education institute for the eldest prince) and the KANG-SEO- WON (an educational institute for the crown successor while he was an ordinary prince before he was conferred as the crown successor,
3. surveyed the conferment procedure, admission procedure. and as an advisory organization, the IEK-WEE-SA (a guard organization for the crown successor) and the JANG-SEO-GAK (an exclusive library for the crown successor's use), and
4. scrutinized the purpose, subpurpose of each subjects, school regulation, curricula and lecturing methods in order to see the content of education in the SI-GANG-WON.
III. Methods
To find the education method, I scrutinized following literatures for the BO-YANG-CHEONG (1st stage pre-school education institnte for the celdest prince), KANG-HAK-CHEONG (2nd stage pre-school education institute for the eldest prince), KANG-SEO-WON (crown prince, education institute), SI-GANG-WON, KYUNG-YOUN-CHEONG (education institute for the King), JONG-HAK(royal education), and SEO-YOUN-KWAN (teacher of the crown successor);
1. KYUNG-KOOK-DAE-JEON (a constitution of the Chosun dynasty)
2. SIE-GANG-WON-JIE(history of the education for the crown successors).
3. YUK-JEON-JOH-RYE (code of laws at the end of- the Chosun dynasty).
4. SEONG-HAK-JIP-YO (monarchial ethics established by Lee, le)
5. SEO-YOUN-BIE-RAM (recomrnandation for educaticn of crown successor)
6. YE-HAK-JIP-YO (education theory for crown successor)
7. CHEONG-GOONG-KWIE-GAM (instructions of royal virtue for crown successor's education)
8. YEOL-SEONG-JO-KYE-KANG-CHAEK-JA-CHA-JYE (list of text-books of kings of previons generations)
9. YE-HAK-JEOL-MOK (educational goal for crown successor)
10. KYUNG- YOUN-KO-SA-BIE-RYE (record of previons Kings), and
11. KYO-HAK-JEONG-RYE (regulation for royal education)
IV. Conclusion
When looking into the formation and the development process of the education in SI-GANG-WON of Korea, it can be noticed that following features were existing ;
1) From the hitorical viewpoint, it was noticeable that the origin of the principles of royalty and the democracy that had ruled most of the kings existed from the KO-CHOSUN era (ancient chosun) to the Chosun dynasty era, had been, to quite good extent, based on the idea of virtuous ruling which had deeply rooted on the Korean history.
Such principles of royalty had affected much to the education of the crown successors who existed from the Trio Kingdom era, and through the Koryo dynasty and even upto the Chosun dynasty, and had continuously been handed down its idea.
2) From the view pont of systematical development of the crown successors' education, it can be known that, even before the Chosun dynasty birth, the crown successors' education had been performed as a part of royal ruling in every generation of the kingdoms, and in the course of such performance, it had been consolidated with its foundation for systematical development. Shilla dynasty had DONG-GOONG (an educational institute for crown successor) where they started the education for the crown successor, Kogooryo performed it, in a little more diversified manner, at TAE-HAK (a national university) etc, and Baekjye was in a matured state in which they could dispatch teachers for education of Japanese crown successors, and it becomes enough base for supposition that they must have had an education system for their crown successor. In the Koryo era, the education system and the content had started to be developed in a materialized and systemized state at it comes down from DONG-GOONG, through TAE-JA-BOO, TAE-JA-CHEOM-SA-BOO, SYE-JA-CHEOM-SA-BOO, SYE-JA-BOO and to JING-WON-DANG. And it was noticed that such systematic development had completed its systematic construction and the YE-HAK-DUK-MOK (crown education) when it reached down to the Chosun dynasty era.
3) In the chosun dynasty era, the crown education was found, as having developed to emphasize more the Maintenance than Creation, the Civil ruling than forceful conguer, and the reversion than accomplishment, and having developed into a confucian royal ruling which had later been sublimated into the principles of royalty. The trace of the crown education could be found in the accomplishments of the kings who carried out the royal and people loving ruling based upon the people paying much charity upon their livings, in the light of the confucian principle and in the records of KOOK-JO-BO-GAM (accomplishment record of previous kings), KYUNG- YOUN-KO-SA-BIE-RYE, and KEANG-JANG-LOK (summary of KOOK-JO-BO-GAM) etc.
4) Peering into the crown education in the Chosun dynasty era, it had been performed with a variety of systems and regulation at the time, In a well arranged educational order starting from the SEO-CHEONG of SAN-SHIL-CHEONG before birth, through KANG-HAK-CHEONG, KANG-SEO-WON, SIE-GANG-WON and KYUNG-YOUN-CHEONG with the organizations' regulations.
5) The basic theory for the crown education was the confucism and it was found that the crowns had learned the royal virtue of peaceful ruling after self-learning and orderly family relationship, through SIE-GANG-WON-JIE, SEONG-HAK-JIP-YO, SEO-YOUN-BIE-RAM, YE-HAK-JIP-YO, KYUNG-YUN-BIE-RYE, CHONG-GOONG-KWIE-GAM etc, based on the principles of royalty established through the Chinese YO, SOON, and Joo dynasties. The modern sense in the education performance in SIE-GANG-WON, was tried to find trough a series of study to see the educational purpose of the principles of royalty from the confucism philosophy, the education contents from the YE-HAK-JEOL-MOK, and the education method from the lecturing regulations and by scrutinizing the education in the SIE-GANG-WON from the pre-school education and upto fetal education. The modern sense can be summarized as follows
First, the instructions of the principles of royalty, i. e., IEP-JIE (establish a will to succeed), JIN-HAK (study persistantly and cendlessly), KUK-KIE (endure). NAP-KAN (be open and accept advises), SAH-CHEON (respect parent and heaven), JA-MIN (love people), WON-YOUNG (stay away from the deceitfulness), SOONG-KUM (be deligent and thrifty) JIE-KYUM (be modest) HEO-KONG (stay middle, not staning for one party or a side), HO-SAENG (love living thmgs and perform charity), TAK-LOO (study close minded opinions), KUNG-SYE(save and be open even toward small opinions), KYE-CHAL {be generous), KYO-KUP (be nimble in correcting wrong done). MQO-SHIL (realize with faithfulness) and SHIN-JONG (ending will be good when you performed a virturous ruling and right behaviors), are the citizen's ethics that is required even in today, and they should be re-arranged to meet the reality, and the SA-SO-JEOL of Lee. DukMoo is the subinstructions which are the living ethics that we must observe, Therefore, when those instructions have been re-arranged in the modern sense, the real conciliation could be achieved. the virtuous ruling could be realized and the complet education could be accomplished.
Second, even though it possesses quite good limitations as it had been a crown education, it is emphasized that the crown education was carried out for the sake of the race and the nation in the light that it was an education performed not only for the crown successor himself but for, after all, the people also.
Third, the education contents that he had to perceive and realized them as a ruler, had been a foundation that he had to learn as a human being rather than as a ruler, thus they imply a certain educational value which can be a subject to be learned bv the social leaders and other highly educated citizens far purpose of their further trainirg of the personality.
Finally, although the crown education had actively been carried out at the SIE-GANG-WON, the educations had continuously been chained from the fetal education upto KYUNG-YOUN which was an occupational education for the kings, with close inter-relationship, and it gives a sense for lifelong education and for early education in the modern society.
