Finally, Faulkner has successfully passed the fastidious screening of his readers and critics. The mid-2Oth century has witessed a remarkable change of Faulkner's literary status from a rural Oxford fictionist into one of the greatest contemporary world novelists. He has not only graphically portrayed the unique values and vices of American literature in terms of "Tradition and Individual Talent" together with Hawthorne, Melville and Henry James, but also he has sincerely metamorphosed local-colored literary particulars into immediate universals commanding attentions of the world-great writers such as Marlaux, Camus, Sartre, Mann and Kafka. He has won world-wide recognition and achievement by universalizing and refining the unique local customs and folkways of Yoknapatawpha. In addition, he has not relied on old traditional ways and methods. He has positively and ore atively destroyed the old manneristic easy-going suiting methods. Courageously he attempted to employ original fresh new compositional devices and motives of his own creation, such as dislocation of time, unique writing style, gradual situation presentation method, archetypal primeval human instinct, egos wandering along the two rivers of id and superego, kaleidoscopic reflections of mirror images, etc. Most of these devices are equally appealing, however, rather more appealing is the ego-shadow doubling relation relevant to the character setting.
Faulkner's works mostly evince the deep delicate relation between the ego and the other selves, as are shown between Joe and other characters (Joanna and Grimm) in Light in August and between Quentin in The Sound and the fury and others(Henry and Bon) in Absalom, Absalom ! The shadow, mistaken to have been, completely expelled out of Joe's consciousness, has stealthily and persistently lurked deep below his subconsciousness. Joe has again found In Joanna his own shadow involving dark female features. Joe and Joanna are each other's alter egos and feel sympathy and hatred at once for each other. He finally finds in her his own dark self involving "moist, dark, overpowering, clinging, smothering" female features. This ego's sympathetic love for his homogenuous copy, his other self disabled Joe and Joanna from their being completely separated for all their emotional reluctance and dislike for each other. The ego's abhorrence of his homogenuous copy, his other self, caused Joe to hate Joanna, and to bring her to death finally. The opposition case is true of the ego-shadow doubling relation between Joe Christmas and Percy Grimm. Pecy is for Joe the ego-ideal representing the male features such as "cleanliness and purity, coldness and hardness". So Joe prefers to have his dark half murdered by the other bright half of his ego-ideal, represented by Percy Grimm. This 'murder' has for Joe the same psychic significance as his own suicide.
Absalom Assalom ! presents Quentin with his two different internal conflicting halves, represented by Henry Sutpen and Charles Eon. Bon represents for Quentin his own shadow, his dark self who feels incestuous love while Henry represents his bright self, his ego-ideal that chastises the seducer. Henry's murder of Bon represents the murder of the dark self by the ego-ideal, the bright self. Quentin's psychic ego implies two diffeent conflicting halves, the bright half of revenger, Henry, and the dark half of the seducer, Bon. The murder of Bon by Henry is for Quentin the murder by the Narcissistic ego, Henry, of his own half who is menacing the existence of his own seducing alter ego. Absalom Absalom ! presents the incestuous love and struggle of Henry and Eon for thier sister, Judith Sutpen, that reminisces the suicide by Quentin in The Sound and the fury, who is drowned while trying to abolish his own shadow representing his own incestuous love for his sister, Candace.
