This research was to determine and compare the inactivation of total coliform as the indicator organism with chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ozone and MIOX for drinking water treatment and distribution systems. This study was carried out to review experimentally the limited kinetic models applied frequently for potable water disinfection with regard to the dosage of disinfectant, contact time, pH, temperature and DOC. The adequacy of kinetic models used in the field of water treatment was assessed and parameters for various kinetic models were estimated. The water samples were taken from the outlet of settling basin in a conventional surface water treatment system that is provided with the raw water drawn from the mid-stream of the Han River and the tap water in Konkuk university.
The inactivation curves obtained from a series of disinfection processes were shaped with a general a tailing-off and biphasic mode of inactivation, i.e. a sharp loss of bacterial viability within 5min. followed by an extended phase with little loss The decay reaction rates during the first phase were better described by the n th order. The n order of reaction was 2.9 and 2.5 for chlorine and chlorine dioxide. The decay reaction rates during the second phase could be expressed by a first order reaction rate. Ozone reaction rates could be described by 2.2 orders.
The parameters estimated by the models of Chick-Watson, Hom, and Selleck from our experimental data obtained with chlorine, chlorine dioxide, MIOX and ozone are as follows. It is noted that among the models reviewed with regard to the experimental data obtained, the Selleck model appeared to most closely resemble the total coliform survival curve.
For chlorine, log (N/N_(o))=0.16CT with the Chick-Watson model(n=l), log(N/N_(o))=-0.71C^(0.87)T with the Chick-Watson model (n≠1), log (N/N_(o))=-1.87C^(0.47)T^(0.36) with the Hom model, log (N/N_(o))=-2.691og( 1+CT/0.27) with the Selleck model.
For chlorine dioxide, log(N/N_(o))=-1.53CT with the Chick-Watson model(n=l) log(N/N_(o))=-2.29C^(0.94)T with the Chick-Watson model (n≠1), log (N/N_(o))=-3.64C^(0.43)T^(0.24) with the Horn model, log (N/N_(o))=-2.051og(l+CT/0.03) with the Selleck model.
For ozone, log (N/N_(o))=-2.59CT with the Chick-Watson model(n=l), log(N/N_(o))=-2.82C^(0.36)T with the Chick-Watson model (n≠1), log (N/N_(o))=-4.52C^(0.26)T^(0.197) with the Hom model, log (N/N_(o))=-1.681og( l+CT/0.003) with the Selleck model.
For MIOX, log (N/N_(o))=-0.18CT with the Chick-Watson model(n=l), log(N/N_(o))=-l.04C^(0.56)T with the Chick-Watson model (n≠1), log (N/N_(o))=-2.01C^(0.24)T^(0.31) with the Hom model, log (N/N_(o))=-2.00log(1+CT/0.07) with the Selleck model.
Inactivation rate could vary with influencing factors and should be dependent on the concentration of reaction compounds. The bactericidal effects of disinfectants were decreased as the pH increased in the range of pH 6-9. The influence of pH change on the killing effect of chlorine dioxide was not strong, but that on ozone and free chlorine was sensitive.
The bactericidal effects of the disinfectants were increased as the temperature increase. This result shows that CT values required for coliform inactivation at winter season can lead to decreases by decrease in temperature. Log inactivation ratio for coliforms was 2.4, 3.0 and 3.9 by increase 1mg/L with chlorine chlorine dioxide and ozone. The activation energies were 36,1053, 29,822, 24,906 and 30,337 J/mol of chlorine, chlorine dioxide, ozone and MIOX for coliforms. The inactivation effects were shown in the lowest order of chlorine, MIOX, chlorine dioxide and ozone.
CT values with the dose of chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone for T plant based on 99.9 % were 2.40, 1.00 and 0.60 mg min/L of total coliform. CT values with the dose of chlorine, chlorine dioxide and ozone based on 99.99% were 7.86, 2.60 and 2.19 mg min/L of total coliform. CT levels for chlorine obtained approximately 2.4 and 4 times that of chlorine and ozone.
In order to observe the effect of carry-over suspended solids on chlorine consuniption and disinfection efficiency, the water samples were filtered, prior to inoculation of coliforms, with membrane of both 2.5㎛ and 11.0㎛ in pore size, and with a sand filter of 1.0mm in effective size and of 1.4 in uniformity coefficient. In filtered water, chlorine disinfection effectiveness is enhanced compared with non-filtered water. This increased disinfection effectiveness seen in filtered water is caused by a change in disinfectants demand. Thus, the properties of disinfection process depend on the effectiveness of the filter process.
A mixing intensity of chemical disinfectant to react on the microorganisms was a key influential factor in the disinfection process. Total coliform inactivation by chlorine was increased as G value increased. But for a complete mix of the chlorine solution, the intensity of initial mixing might not need to be as high as 1000 sec^(-1) of G value. The G value above 500 sec^(-1) showed little difference in disinfection effectiveness.
In the distribution system, the log survival ratio of suspended coliforms in the distribution system for 15 min of chlorine dioxide, ozone and MIOX 1 mg/L was 1.7, 2.2 and 1.2 times higher than that of free chlorine. In spite of the consistency of chlorine residuals by 0.2 mg/L, bacteria regrowth was observed in the distribution system. and this was confirmed by the SEM results. The scanning electron microscope of pipe sample in a distribution system demonstrated that the inner wall of the pipe was not smooth, permitting crevices to exist and bacteria to grow.
Pipe materials can also affect the efficiency of disinfectant. The inactivation rate of coliforms appeared in the lowest order of carbon steel, galvanized steel and copper pipe in the distribution system. The disinfectant consumption rate appeared to be adverse.
The predominant coliform bacteria in simulated distribution system were enterobacter agglomerans, klebsiella pneumoniae before chlorination. Klebsiella pneumonia which has strong tolerance to the disinfectant was all detected in carbon steel, galvanized steel and copper pipe after chlorination. The identification of coliform bacteria that was detected before chlorination was varied more than that after chlorination in simulated distribution systems.
DOC concentration of the corresponding MW constituent after the ozonation converts them to smaller ones. Particularly, ozonation effectively leads to the reduction of high-MW substances and the production of low-MW substances.
Moreover, ozonation reduced UV_(254), SUVA values, thus reducing the DBPFP through converting DBP precursors to non precursors.
