Joseon-era embroidery albums were produced as book covers for the writings of families that dramatically survived through war, which were treasured and passed down through the generations, or as bound embroidered copies of other images. Later, inscriptions were added to the albums by illustrious scholars, further increasing their value. The addition of such inscriptions to embroidery albums over several centuries built up additional layers of history, lending them high value as historical sources. Produced primarily among ruling circles in the 17th century, embroidery albums were compiled and bound in hard covers as an indication of reverence for ancestors. The overall process of their production was led by men, while embroidery was done by skilled daughters-in-law in each family. Though the original purpose of Joseon embroidery albums was thus to bind and preserve writings passed down through the generations as family heirlooms, it appears that SongSi-yeol(宋時烈), a member of the political faction known as the Westerners (西人, Seoin) bestowed the writings of SinSaimdang(申師任堂) with new significance in terms of political identity and academic legitimacy. Through the 17th and 18th centuries, Sin came to be politically idealized among members of the Westerners faction, developing new meaning. In a bid to rival the Westerners, members of the Southerners (南人, Namin) faction embarked on an active quest to dig up writings by women in their families such as Jeon Gajingwan(『傳家珍玩』) and Jeon Gabocheop(『傳家寶帖』), leading to a political battle between daughters-in-law from the Andong Kim clan(安東金氏), the Andong Jang clan(安東張氏), the Muan Bak clan(務安朴氏) and KimImbyeokdang(金林碧堂). Having initially been produced in the 17th century as a means of revering ancestors, embroidery albums had, by the 18th century, been engulfed in a political maelstrom.
Literature by women thus became the focus of new attention in the 17th and 18th centuries. Rather than this leading to higher esteem for its authors as renowned artists, however, this literature was endlessly evaluated and analyzed according to the views of the men who conferred new political and literary meaning upon it. This inevitably hindered the growth of women’s literature. Nonetheless, in this process, opinions among readers of embroidery albums that such works could not possibly be the work of a single individual, and that they surpassed even the talents of the Creator, can at least be regarded as a slight shift in consciousness. Moreover, women’s education in the homes of scholars, which had respected the production of embroidery albums as an act of filial in the 17th century, was no longer seen as an obligation by the 18th century, due to changing customs and social prejudices. This is presumed to be due to the realities of class society. In these overall circumstances, the winner of the stifling political battle waged among Joseon noble families via embroidery albums was ultimately won by SinSaimdang, a syndrome that remains today.
