익산 지역 유학의 전개 양상과 그 특징 = A study on Historical development and characteristics of Confucianism in the Iksan region

국문 초록 (Abstract)

20세기 초반의 행정구역 개편에 따라 함열현, 용안현, 여산현 등을 포괄하는 익산시는 지역학으로서 익산학을 활성화하면서 전통 시대의 다양한 역사 문화 전통에 관한 이해를 심화하고 있다. 하지만 마한과 백제의 고도(古都)로서의 이미지와 근대 시기의 문화 전통에 관심이 편중되어 고려 시대 이후 조선 시대를 관통하며 이어진 유학 전통에 관한 관심과 이해는 상대적으로 부진한 면을 드러내고 있다고 할 수 있다. 그간 익산의 유학 전통에 관한 지역의 관심이 없지 않았지만, 체계화하지 않은 자료 정리와 특정 학자나 가문에 편중된 이해 등은 익산의 유학 전통에 관한 전반적 이해에는 일정한 한계를 노정할 가능성이 작지 않고 할 수 있다.
이러한 문제에 유의하여 본고에서는 고려 시대 이후 익산을 배경으로 활동한 주요 유학자를 중심으로 지역 유학의 흐름을 검토하고, 이를 기반으로 익산의 유학이 보여준 특징적 면모를 개략적으로 확인하고자 하였다. 익산 지역에서는 고려 중기 이후부터 유학적 지식인을 지속해서 배출하며 유학 전통을 정립하였고, 조선 중기 이후에는 특기할 만한 유학자를 배출하여 호남 유학을 풍성하게 하는 데 기여하였다. 김장생(金長生)이 익산에서 활동한 이후 율곡 학맥을 계승한 다수의 유학자를 배출하며 지역의 유학 지형을 형성하며 시대의 고비마다 의미 있는 활동을 전개하였다. 특히 왜란과 호란, 그리고 일제강점기를 거치면서 익산의 유학적 지식인들이 보여준 충절의 모습은 호남의 다른 지역과 견주어도 손색이 없는 유학 전통이라 할 수 있다. 이러한 익산 유학의 흐름은 익산학의 한 부분으로서 유학 전통이 자리 잡고 있음을 보여주는 것이라 할 수 있으며, 향후 익산 지역의 유학 연구가 체계적으로 이루어져야 함을 시사하는 것이라 이해할 수 있다.

Following the reorganization of administrative districts, Iksan City, which encompasses Hamyeol-hyeon(咸悅縣), Yongan-hyeon(龍安縣), and Yeosan-hyeon(礪山縣), has recently been revitalizing Iksan Studies as a regional study, and through this, various historical cultures of the traditional era. Promoting understanding of tradition. However, Iksan Studies is focused on the image of Mahan and the ancient capital of Baekje and the culture of the modern period, showing a relatively lack of interest in and understanding of the Confucian tradition in the region that continued from the Goryeo period through the Joseon period. Of course, there was local interest in Iksan's Confucian traditions. However, the existing understanding, such as unsystematized organization of Confucian scholars and biased understanding of specific scholars or families, is highly likely to present certain limitations in understanding the overall Confucian tradition in Iksan.
Keeping in mind these limitations, in this paper, I reviewed the historical flow of regional Confucianism, focusing on major Confucian scholars who have been active in the Iksan region since the Goryeo Dynasty, and based on this, tried to identify the characteristic aspects of Confucianism in Iksan. The Iksan region established the local Confucian tradition by continuously producing Confucian intellectuals from the mid-Goryeo period onwards, and contributed to the enrichment of Honam Confucianism by producing a number of notable Confucian scholars from the mid-Joseon period onwards. After Kim Jang-saeng (金長生), who served as the governor of Iksan County, worked in Iksan, he produced a number of Confucian scholars who inherited the Yulgok academic lineage, forming the region's Confucian learning landscape and carrying out meaningful activities at each critical juncture of the times. In particular, the loyalty shown by Confucian intellectuals in Iksan during the Japanese invasions of Korea, the Manchu War, and the Japanese colonial period was a Confucian tradition comparable to that of other regions in Honam. And the tradition of Confucianism continued through the various activities of Confucian intellectuals in Iksan even through the 20th century, when the influence of Confucianism rapidly weakened. Through this flow of Confucianism in Iksan, I confirmed that the tradition of Confucianism is established as a part of the currently active Iksan studies, and tried to suggest that Confucian studies in the Iksan region should continue to be conducted systematically in the future.
