Nietzsche was a philosopher of life. Life was his only criterion for value judgment. Nietzsche’s ultimate mission was, therefore, conserving and promoting life. For him, Christianity was nothing but a “diseased and decrepit offspring of decadence.”(AC19) As an advocate of life, he had to confront Christianity with a hammer. On the other hand, Nietzsche’s anti-religious attitude must be considered within the context of his time. At the peak of modernity, people were firmly convinced of the triumph of reason over authorities and traditions. The center had definitely moved from God to Human beings, and from afterlife to this world. Nietzsche, albeit through his radical and unorthodox thoughts, was also a man of his time, a faithful spokesman of the epoch.
Proclaiming himself as the antichrist, Nietzsche proudly announced his summa, Thus Spoke Zarathustra, as ‘the fifth Gospel.’ In fact the Zarathustra parodies the Gospels throughout, both in contents and in style. The pagan teacher thoroughly plagiarizes various acts of Jesus, from selecting apostles through the last supper and betrayal of the disciples to the sermon on the mount. However, the contents of the teachings differ from those of Jesus greatly. For example, the Gospel consistently commands to “repent and believe the good news”; in essence it demands absolute obedience to God and His commandment. On the contrary, Zarathustra teaches all human beings to discover their own dignity and to love themselves, for the greatest love is not the love for thy neighbor but the “love of oneself.”(Z,Ⅲ,5) Zarathustra wants his disciples to become the master of themselves, with their mind free and their feet firmly on the ground. Neither should guilty conscience nor sin be a hindrance to this process.

Nietzsche certainly criticized Christianity; but he did not attack Jesus. He even suggested that Jesus became a woe to multitude by dying too young; that he was noble enough to learn the love of life should he have lived long enough, but his disciples defamed life of this world as undesirable, or even sinful. In such a manner Nietzsche tried to separate Christianity from its progenitor thoroughly, for h...
