구미호 이야기의 확장과 억압된 타자의 귀환1) ―<구미호 여우누이뎐>을 중심으로 = A Study on the Expansion of the Tale of the Nine-Tailed Fox and the Return of Suppressed Others ―With a focus on The Tale of Sister Fox, the Nine-Tailed Fox

The purpose of this study was to identify the qualities causing relationship changes and fear between man and the nine-tailed fox through the expansion and transformation of the nine-tailed fox tale. In the “Tale of Fox Metamorphosis”, “Fox Beads” and “Sister Fox”, the nine-tailed fox is depicted as a being outside the realm of man and is reproduced as a monster and other being with such dreadful qualities as “disguise as human,” “fox beads,” and “woman taking out and eating the liver.” In Town of Myths and The Nine-Tailed Fox, the nine-tailed fox wishes to become human and fails, thus contributing to the expansion and transformation of fear in the format of the “grudge of the nine-tailed fox.” Town of Myths and The Nine-Tailed Fox of 2008 depict the nine-tailed fox as the object of discrimination and murders that emerged within us. Greed over the nine-tailed fox is violence against an isolated individual for the value of the group, suppressing others for the identity of the subject. In a drama titled The Tale of Sister Fox, the Nine-Tailed Fox, the nine-tailed fox is described as an other being created by man and reproduced as a victim to for the subject to overcome a crisis. It depicts the nine-tailed fox as “more human than man” with maternal love, highlighting man`s desire and discrimination and alienation against others by putting the maternal love of the nine-tailed fox and man`s greed side by side. The drama also overturns relationships between man and the nine-tailed fox, a monster. Yoon Du-su and Mrs. Yang, who kill Yeoni for their daughter, are the real monsters. So is Manshin that becomes an immortal monster, eating the liver of man obsessed with desire. Man`s selfish mind, which is willing to victimize others for one`s own desire, is the true fear. Ugly desire is a part of man`s self, which means fear will never go away. Changes to relationships between man and the nine-tailed fox in the stories of the nine-tailed fox show that new qualities of fear have emerged according to the changes of times. A dual attitude of desire and fear regarding the nine-tailed fox, who is an other being heterogeneous from man, is a metaphor of fear and fascination with others in today`s multicultural society. Such an interpretation is to expand the meanings of the nine-tailed fox as a metaphor of a minority group or others against the subjects in society rather than limiting it as a monster in a transmitted tale. Reflecting upon the relationships between the subjects and others in today`s Korean society through such an expansion of interpretation can be a way to read the signs of anxiety and rupture in the society.
