This study attempted to summarize the details of the spiritual culture of head families and seek present uses by examining the lives of Bulchunwee figures, who played a central role in head families. For this purpose, this study considered records of 64 persons whose data could be secured out of 117 Bulchunwee figures of head families in Gyeongsangbuk-do. The records mainly describe the lineage, childhood, and adolescent manhood of the deceased, in addition to the elderly life and evaluation of the deceased.
Since the coming-of-age ceremony took place at the ages of 15 to 20 years, childhood was defined as ages between 1 and 14 years. Childhood refers to the time of learning under parental guidance. Common aspects that appeared in the records of the 64 persons included personality, devotion to parents, and learning. For personality, the records stress goodness, gentleness, generosity, strong will, and courage. For devotion to parents, they served and obeyed parents sincerely. For attitude toward learning, the records commonly describe unusual intelligence and sagacity in understanding the meaning of sentences. The records also explain that the figures strove to read while sitting up straight all day long. Adolescent manhood is the time after 15 years old, when the figures entered government service through state examinations and got married to form a family. Similar to childhood, the records for adolescent manhood include the description of personality, devotion to parents, and learning. Government service life and family life have been added. For personality, the records commonly show that the figures harmonized with the surrounding people with good nature and practiced moderation with sternness. For devotion to parents, the figures sincerely took care of their parents and went through a funeral process based on the family rites of Zhu Xi. In most cases, they volunteered to work in localities to serve old parents. For learning, the records are mainly about how the figures were absorbed in reading that they almost forgot to eat or sleep and endeavored to foster young scholars. For government service life, they looked after the lives of the people and practiced integrity in localities while maintaining an upright attitude to make forthright advice about wrong policies implemented by the king when working in the palace. For family life, the records commonly depict how they managed the household properly and had a close relationship with brothers.
When summarized based on the Confucian ideology, such lives of the Bulchunwee figures are classified into filial duty, loyalty, love of people, and integrity. Representative practices of filial duty included support, nursing, and three-year mourning of parents. Loyalty involved worrying about the security of the nation, mainly comprising the practice of fidelity and remonstrance. Love of people was primarily practiced after being assigned to local officers, prioritizing the lives of people and handling duties fairly to prevent causing unfairness. Integrity represented the scholar spirit by managing frugal and simple everyday life and practicing uncorrupted life as government officers.
The lives of the Bulchunwee figures provided coordinates to guide the lives of their descendants, settling down as the leading spiritual culture of head families. Other typical cultures of head families are the old house culture, food culture, and rite culture, but these cultures fail to differentiate head families. Therefore, it is necessary to convert old houses, food, and rites into ‘value culture’ instead of simply perceiving them as material culture or behavior culture. Head families can produce universal values to be empathized by and shared with people who are unfamiliar with head family culture by discovering the spirits (stories) indwelling in old houses, food, and rites. The lives of the Bulchunwee figures can be used as excellent sources of such universal values. In this sense, the lives of the Bulchunwee figures can be seen as the core elements that create and raise the brand values of head families.
