Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra is the most magnificent of all his plays. The verse is gorgeous the characterization is subtle and the construction is unique and elaborate.
Antony and Cleoptable was probably written early in 1607 or late in 1606. So that it appars to have been the immediat, sequal to King Lear. In Antony andmore other experimented with rapid alternations. The play contains no less thanmore other experimented with rapid alternations. The play contains no less than Cleopatra Shakespeare was writing with delight, understanding and taste, and also with a new command of words, rhythms and imagery, In the language of King Lear and Macbeth there is a suggestion of deliberate, conscious experiment, espe-cially in the use of a more elaborate kind of imagery : in the other hand, in An-tony and Cleopatra the new technique has become instinctive.
As being well known, Coleridge, S. T. praised very highly of the value of An-tony and Cleopatra on his Shakespeare criticism. Coleridge's assertion that in An-tony and Cleopatra Shakespeare followed history more minutely than in any other play might well be disputed. Especially in Antony and Cleopatra Shakespeare once more other experimented with rapid alternations. The play contains no less than forty two episodes, of which one only exceeds tree hundred lines, and twenty more other experimented with rapid alternations. The play contains no less than more other experimented with rapid alternations. The play contains no less than forty two episodes, of which one only exceeds three hundred lines, and twenty four are less than seventy five lines in length. Therefore Antony and Cleopatra is unique in dramatic structure and its dramaturgy.
In this the Writer tried to seek the charateristics of Antony and Cleopatre in term of paradoxical expressions, paradoxical characters, and paradoxical structures. Our whole hearted response to the play, Antony and Cleopata recognizes both sides of the paradox, the abundant vitality as well as the inherent loss and limitatio. In stagecraft also, the contrast between Egypt and Rome were insisted upon. Egypt and Rome were thus opposed and contrasted throughout the play They represented contradictory schemes of value, contradixtory attitudes to, and interpretations of the universe. And so, whole play should be read with the opposition of Egyption and Roman values in mind
Conclusively, The Writer would like to discuss the matter of evil and sin appeared in Antomy and Cleopatra. As we know, in King Lear, Shakespeare struggled with the problem of evil, and in Macbeth, he struggled with the problem of sin in a Christian universe. Neverthless, in Antony and Cleopatra, Shakespeare returns to the old problem: what are the positive bases of the good life? He finds them in the human affections, and also he finds that the human affections are deeply rooted in the sensual nature. Of course, Cleopatra was the symbol of these, and she was sensual even in death; for paradoxically, it is these Egyptian values which must survive death. On the other hand, Caesar's sins were deeper-rooted and more deliberate than the sins of Antony and Cleopatra. And Caesar's heart was entirely set upon the passing world.
We recognize that Shakespeare in his last phase tried to show us his view point of the world and his philosophy of value to us. In Antony and Cleopatra Shakes-peare insisted that the Egyptian values need a Roman purgatory to fit them for survival, and they were cleansed, through adversity, of the taint of selfishness. Antony kills himself in order to rejoin Cleopatra whom he believes to be dead, while Cleopatra looks forward in the same way to their future reunion. At any rate, Shakespeare created a new view point of the world by virtue of the act of Antony and Cleopatra, and he realized the reconciliation of the different values in this play.
