在美韓人의 定着過程에서의 宗敎의 役割 : 하와이의 韓人社會와 기독교를 中心으로 = The Role of Religion in the Assimilation of Koreans in America-with Special Reference to the Korean Community and Christian Church in Hawaii

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

1. It is said that wherever there are Koreans, there is a church. During the past two decades about 600,000 Koreans have emigrated to the United States, and during that period they have established approximately 1,000 Korean churches in that country. The purpose of this research was to investigate the role that religion plays in the assimilation of Korean -American society. The particular focus of the study was the Korean community in Hawaii and the role of the Christian church in that community.
2. The mission of religion, and its role in human society, is to enable human beings to live as true persons, i.e., religion functions to promote humanization. The basic conditions required for Koreans in America to be able to live as true persons can be summarized in terms of three points as follows. The first is the need for a religious dimension of life which establishes a clear sense of identity as human beings created in the image of God. The second is the need for a clear sense of identity as Koreans, i.e., as persons with root in Korea. Then the third is the need for adjustment and assimilation to live as full persons in the context of American society and culture.
3. Korean churches in America have a dual existence as both religious communities and Korean communities. Their very existence is itself an expression of their meaning and mission. Looking again at the specific programs of the Korean churches, first, through worship and pastoral care they help the Korean immigrants become persons who are free in the spiritual sense, free because of a firm conviction of their own salvation and a full realization of themselves as children of God. Second, the churches help to preserve and maintain cultural roots by holding worship services in the immigrants' native language and conducting other activities in Korean as well, including educational programs about Korean culture, and thus contribute to the formation of a personal and cultural identity as persons who are Korean-American. Third, the churches have various programs help to establish among the immigrants a sense of pride and fulfillment as Americans who also can contribute to on going development of American culture.
In conclusion, it can be said that the Korean churches in America play a very important role in preventing the immigrants from remaining as uprooted marginal persons separated from their motherland and living on the fringes of American society, and in helping them develop a firm sense of identity and pride as persons who understand themselves as being both Korean and American.
