Located to the south of Daemosan Mountain in Seoul, Heolleung Royal Tomb comprises twin mounds constructed for King Taejong (太宗, r. 1400~1418), the third king of the Joseon Dynasty, and his wife Queen Consort Wongyeong (元敬王后, 1365~1420) of the Min family. Heolleung Royal Tomb and Geonwolleung Royal Tomb, the tomb of King Taejo(太祖, r. 1392~1408)’ and the founder of the Joseon Dynasty, are the only tombs featuring a shed (bigak) for the memorial stele. Inside the shed in Heolleung stand side by side a stele erected in the fifteenth century and another reconstructed in the seventeenth century. What is also noteworthy is that there remains the Royal Protocol Recording the Construction of Stone Monument in Heolleung Royal Tomb (獻陵碑石重建廳儀軌, Heolleung biseok junggeoncheong uigwe), compiled during the reign of King Sukjong, which provides various records related to the restoration of the Heolleung memorial stele.
The Royal Protocol details the rebuilding process of the memorial stele in Heolleung, which begins with the quarrying of the stones, including from Ganghwa, Chungju, and Gang-eum. Stone from Ganghwa is a nearly achromatic granite. Due to their solidity and sturdiness, they were used to make stone structures for tombs of the Joseon royal family and scholar-officials. In the end, however, soft stone from Gang-eum was chosen according to the fifteenth-century stele tradition for erecting a high-quality memorial stele. The master artisans recruited to create the memorial stele had also been engaged in other national construction efforts. Among them were stonemasons, blacksmiths, and sculptors. The Royal Protocol categorized some stonemasons as the artisans for dragon heads, which indicates that there were stonemasons responsible for making the dragon-shaped capstone of the stele. Moreover, engraver engraved characters on the black stele and dusted it with flour to ensure that the characters stood out. Many other artisans participated in thisrebuilding process. For example, there were carpenters and roof tilers to build the shed for steles; scroll makers and metalworkers printed the stele inscription and mounted it on a scroll as an offering to the king; and over a thousand soldiers were tasked with transporting the stele. The reconstruction of Heolleung memorial stele clearly required considerable human resources and a massive budget.
The two memorial steles standing side by side respectively reflect the stele styles of the early and late Joseon periods. Overall, the fifteenth-century stele is in the manner of the Chineseinfluenced steles often erected at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty. However, the tortoise-shaped bases reflect traditional Goryeo steles. The seventeenth-century stele is built in a rather distinctive and contrasting manner. For example, its dragon-shaped capstone largely follows the seventeenthcentury manner but partially applies styles from the fifteenth century that were no longer common by its day. Accordingly, among the surviving late Joseon steles, such an ornamental capstone engraved with an inscription in seal script can be seen only in the Heolleung memorial stele of 1695.Based on the tortoise-shaped base established in the fifteenth century, a dragon head in the style that began to be produced in the late seventeenth century was added. Influenced by this example, other tortoise-shaped bases for later steles were provided a dragon head. Furthermore, the rebuilding project for Heolleung memorial stele broke the taboo of erecting steles at Joseon royal tombs and justified the construction of stone markers at royal tombs during the reign of King Yeongjo. Thus, the reconstruction of the memorial stele in Heolleung in 1695 was a stylistically and politically significant event.
