Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770 ~ 1831) was born in Stuttgant on August 27.1770,and during his early life the world witnessed revolutions in America and France as well as following of Germany's Romantic movement.
Hegel entered the university of Tubingen to study the Greek classics and the theology. Hegel's theological studies there decisively shaped the development of his philosophical outlook.
Central to Hegel's philosophy was the concept of the Geist or spirit. The term 'Geist' was inspired by his theological training. This spirit is a real, concrete, objective force that remains one, yet in particularized as spirits of specific nations and impersonated in particular individuals as the Weltgeist.
In the Hegelian philosophy of the world, history occupied a special place, for it is in history that the Weltgeist(world spirit) progresses toward self-consciousness. This is seen by Hegel as the gradual realization of freedom, from that of a single leader in automatic government of antiquity to the liberty enjoyed by all in modem constitutional systems.
Hegel asserted that the process of the development and the realization of the spirit was the justification of God in history. Hegel was deeply interested in how rational human beings relate to that which transcends their individuality.
History is the evolution of freedom and develop through the dynamic relationship of each individual citizen's will with that of the community at large.
Hegel's place in the history of ideas is significant and he can be seen as a precursor of Marx, a critic of Kant, and the target of anti-enlightenment irrationalism. Hegel's Philosophy of Right (Grundlinien der Philosophie des Rechts) is recognized as a great work of political philosophy.
Hegel's Philosophy of Right contains broad discussions of such Topics as persons and right, property, punishment, moral psychology, civil society, freedom and war. The Philosophy of Right consists of Hegel's preface, abstract Right, morality, civil society, and the state. The Philosophy of Right explains Hegel's legal and political thought. The key concepts of philosophical thought relate to the legal and political thought. The introduction to the 'Philosophy of Right' (Grundlinien der Philosopie des Rechts) offers the key to understanding his work as a whole. In the Introduction we find a sequence of arguments which lead us the conclusion that the normative life of a society is a complex structure of will. The normative life of a society includes the range of moral beliefs attributable to members of that society together with the characteristic temper as cart of mind associated with the holding of their beliefs. These in turn will include emotions and feelings, as well as the settled habits of moral sensitivity we judge to be virtues. The range of actions deems to be expressive of these beliefs, feelings and virtues as well as, most importantly, the institutions which permit, form and guide their expression. Such institutions will include private property and contract, punishment, domestic associations, structures of economic life, the law and the state.
Hegel's last major work, the Philosophy of Right, develops a political philosophy which holds a precarious balance between rationalism and authoritarianism. Hegel differs from Hobbes in holding that the state is not to be viewed as the guarantor of civil society, but an end in Itself, It is not singly the guardian of personal freedom and property. According to Hegel it is only as a member of the political realm that the individual has objective reality and an ethical life.
Hegel’s ideas had a profound influence, for better or worse, on philosophers, notably Karl Marx. The Hegelian concept the dialectic was to be fundamental component of Marxism.
Many of thinkers were critics of Hegel after his death. But his political thought deems to contribute the present and future political thought. The situation of the capitalistic states in the world today requires the restoration of Hegelian thought, because Hegel's political thought can be seen as a new direction of modem states in the world. In the work the Philosophy of Right we find that dialectical transition is a key concept of his philosophical thought. More important than either further background study of Hegel's system or scholarly reflection on the Hegelian ancestry of later or modern philosophical movements, is that we buckle down to the content of his argument as we elaborate his work ‘The Philosophy of Right’.
