In 1969, large amount of Buddhist Reliquaries and votive objects were found from the underground palace of Jingzhisi (靜志寺) Pagoda in Dingxian (定縣) of Hebei Province, China. These remains had been buried from the first construction time of the pagoda in Northern Wei to the last enshrinement of the underground palace in the late tenth century. This underground palace was reconstructed more than 4 times after the first construction of the pagoda. Therefore, these remains are very important for understanding the re-enshrinement processes of the Buddhist reliquaries in East Asia.
In most cases, the external shape of a Chinese pagoda built for offering of the Buddha's bodily relic has changed because of a war, a fire or the suppression of Buddhism by a government. During the changes of a pagoda, the relic enshrinement had subsequently changed the style of burial, because people had opened the underground palace for adding the offerings of the Buddha's relics inside the pagoda. The older items or Buddhist reliquaries which had been buried in the underground palace before were re-enshrined there again when the pagoda was reconstructed with the addition of new items and new Buddhist reliquaries. However, the newly buried items were more important for the people who opened and refurnished the pagoda and the Buddhist reliquaries than the old items found from the pagoda except the Buddhist relic itself. These repeated processes of the relic enshrinement of a pagoda had not been studied yet, because of the lack of the materials which showed the full processes of a pagoda. This underground of Jingzhisi Pagoda is very important and interesting since the Buddhist reliquaries and their inscriptions found from Jingzhisi Pagoda show the Buddhist relic enshrinement process from the Northern Wei to Northern Song dynasty.
Here I reexamined the Buddhist reliquaries and their re-enshrinement process of Jingzhisi Pagoda. According to the materials which are known to the present, Jingzhisi Pagoda was first constructed in 453 of Northern Wei, destroyed in the unknown time, then reconstructed in 606 under Sui dynasty. But this pagoda was also collapsed and reconstructed again in 858 under Tang dynasty, and refurnished in 889. This Tang pagoda was totally damaged again during the war between Liao and Northern Song, and reconstructed in 977 by the monk Zhaoguo (昭果) and the emperors of Northern Song. During the refurnishment of the Buddhist reliquaries, the older style of the reliquaries had influenced on the new reliquaries. Most of the remaining items from the underground palace of Jingzhisi Pagoda are made in Northern Song dynasty, which are included the wall paintings of Buddhist Nirvana Scene, white porcelains of Dingyao (定窯) and many copper coins of Song. But these things did not appear in the stone inscription officially written in 977 and buried in the underground palace. It means that the official record on the Buddhist relic enshrinement shows only the highlights according to their views, so the differences between the items recorded in the inscription and those really founded from the site could be found. This is a very important and unforgettable view in understanding the buddhist reliquaries which had been re-enshrined at the same spot over times during its long history.
The Buddha's relic itself was believed as a sacred object for a long time, the re-opening and re-enshrinement of the Buddhist reliquaries inside a pagoda have happened very often. The Buddhist reliquaries excavated from the Jingzhisi Pagoda site show the process of re-enshrinement of the buddhist relic and reliquaries for a long time in a very good condition. This is a very rare case to show the process of the relic enshrinement from the Northern Wei to the Northern Song. Also it is very important that the buddhist arts and materials found from Jingzhisi Pagoda show the stylistic relationships between the late Tang art and the early Northern Song art.
