The ability of memorizing the piece is one of the crucial elements that influence on the successful piano performance. Therefore, systematic and thorough practice for memorization is essential procedure for the successful piano performance. In this study, I researched the related literature of memorization in the view point of Information Processing Theory and discussed about the effective way to practice for memorize the musical pieces based on the ideas of renowned pianists and scholars.
In terms of the Information Processing theory, the constitution of memory has three steps including sensory memory, short-term memory, and long-term memory. Sensory memory stores the information coming from the environment for the very short time, and the information goes on to the short-term memory soon.
Short-term memory is the place where conscious processing of information takes place. The capacity of short-term memory is very limited and the duration of memory is only several minutes. The information that received proper treatment from short-term memory goes on to the long-term memory. Unlike short-term memory, the capacity of long-term memory is limitless and information could be stored for very long time. Hence, memorizing effectively means effective encoding, which is to treat the information in the short-term memory to help moving to long-term memory. The representative ways of encoding include chunking, automaticity, and dual processing, and all of them can be applied for the memorization of piano pieces.
Musical memorization consists of sensory memory, including visual memory, aural memory, and kinesthetic memory, and cognitive memory which is based on the understanding of the pieces from musical analysis. To memorize the piece successfully, a pianist should intend to understand the structure of the piece from the beginning of the learning procedure. The understanding of the structure of the piece is helpful for good memory because it enables to recognize the piece by similar groups, which is called ‘chunking.’ While practicing, automaticity of piano playing is proceeded. For better memorization through kinesthetic memory, pianists should not practice simple and repetitively, but consciously check and memorize the use of muscle and the distance between the keys. Pianists should take extra care if there is a part where are big leaps in the melodic line or contrapuntal part which has imitative left and right hands. Additionally, it is good to use the effect of dual processing for effective memory. It is very helpful to stay away from the piano and carefully look at the music as imagining the sound.
Since all kinds of musical abilities including memory differ from every pianists, one way of practicing cannot be generalized for every pianists. Therefor, pianists should learn the principles and methods of practice for good memorization and develop their own practice technique.
