The goal of this study was to observe the affect of self-expression strategies on the formation of speaking attitudes of elementary school children.
The self-expression strategy applied for the goal attainment of this study referred to and was reconstructed from the assertion training program of Byun Chang Jin and Kim Sung Hee (1980) and the dissertation of Lim Young Wook (2003) and Kim Ho Sook (2005). Kim Sung Hwe's adaptation (1982) ofthe Assertion Behavior Scale produced by Rakos and Schrocder (1980) was reconstructed as a self-expression examination tool to suit the vocabulary level of elementary school students. Speaking attitude tests were reconstructed and used based on the Stated Anxiety Scale developed in specialized anxiety aspects by Kim Sung Hwe and Kim Kyu Shik (1994), the anxiety test form for elementary school students produced by Kim Young Gun (1988), and the Stated Anxiety Test of Lim Young Ok.
Two classes from the sixth grade in I Elementary School in Gwangju metropolitan city were set as study subjects, organized into a test group and a control group. After collected data was scored according to scoring outlines, the SPSS Statistics Program 12.0 was used to verify the hypothesis and analysis was effectuated. Independent t-tests were used to compare scores of the two groups before and after the fact, and corresponding t-tests were used to compare and verify the differences between scores of one group before and after the fact.
Also, to observe the correlation between self-expression and speaking attitudes within the test group, co-relational analysis was effectuated.
A summary of the results of this study, gained by analyzing and verifying the data, are as follows.
First, after self-expression strategies were effectuated, test groups showed more positive results than control groups in self-expression attitudes. In comparisons of self-expression between the two groups after scoring, in the case of sub-items of content elements, the average of the test group was 4.07, while the average of the control group was 3.76, and significant probabilities were .011, showing a significant difference between the two groups, and all sub-items of the test group and all items of self-expression showed a statistically significant difference.
After corresponding sample t-tests were effectuated to verify any differences between scores before and after the fact in the test group and control group regarding self-expression test scores, although all sub-items in the test group and all items of self expression showed statistically significant differences, and though differences in average existed in the control group, statistically significant differences did not seem evident. In the test group, scores after the fact drastically increased compared to scores before the fact, showing that self-expression scores generally improved a lot. However, in the control group, in the case of substantive elements, scores after the fact actually decreased compared to scores before the fact and self-expression showed generally slow improvements.
Second, self-expression strategies showed statistically significant differences in self-expression attitudes within the test group in girls more than boys. After homogeneity t-tests were effectuated to observe differences according to sex in self-expression scores before the fact, significant differences did not exist in tests before the fact between groups by sex, but after independent t-tests of self expression scores after the fact according to sex, boys had an average of 3.86 in substantive element categories and girls had an average of .35, showing that girls had a higher average, and with a significance probability of .019, statistically significant differences were displayed. In overall items of self-expression, the boys’ average was 3.89 while the girls’was 4.22, showing that the girls had a higher average, and with a significance probability of .042, it displayed a statistically significant difference.
Third, self-expression statistics decreased speaking anxiety scores of the test group on a larger scale than in the control group, giving a significant change to speaking attitudes. After corresponding sample t-tests were effectuated to verify any differences in scores before and after the fact in speaking attitudes of each group, statistically significant differences existed in both the test group and control group, but it was evident that the differences in averages before and after the fact were much larger in the test group than in the control group. In overall speaking of the test group, scores before the fact were 2.52 and scores after the fact were 1.73, showing an approximate decrease of 0.8, and in the control group, scores before the fact were 2.23 and scores after the fact were 1.92, showing an approximate decrease of 0.3, showing that speaking attitudes in the test group improved a lot more in a positive direction.
Fourth, self-expression strategies in the speaking attitudes of the test group displayed that girls show more of a statistically significant difference than boys. After independent t-tests of scores after the fact according to sex, statistically significant differences were displayed during and after speaking and in speaking overall. Speaking anxiety scores showed that girls’ scores decreased much more compared to boys’ scores.
Fifth, it was evident that self-expression attitudes and speaking attitudes improved forming correlations with each other. In other words, students with higher self-expression attitude scores had lower speaking anxiety scores, showing the effectiveness of positive change in speaking attitudes.
When the above study results are integrated, self expression strategies gave positive change to the test group more than the control group in self expression attitudes and speaking attitudes, and it can be said that self expression attitudes and speaking attitudes have a statistically significant correlation with each other; and in test results between sexes within the test group, girls showed a statistically meaningful difference greater than that of boys.
