조선시대 독서 방법론 연구 = A Study about the Reading Methodology in the Joseon Dynasty

The purpose of this study is to reflect the reading methodology through the discourse about how to read presented by the scholars who represented history of philosophy in the Joseon dynasty. The discourse on reading of Yulgok Yi I, Nammyeong Cho Shik, Ugye Seong Hon, Taekdang Yi Shik, Uam Song Si-yul, Seongho Yi Ik, Yeonam Park Ji-won, Damhun Hong Dae-yong, Ajeong Lee Deok-mu, Dasan Jeong Yak-yong, and Hanghae was examined. 1. The conclusion deriving from the discourse about how to read in the collection of the scholars works is as follows. The reading methodology divides into three parts. First, it is to understand a text a little at a time (or little by little). Secondly, it is to read a text carefully and deliberately. Lastly, it is to read a text in order to understand the intension of the writer. There are a number of evidences showing that reading is on an extension of academic learning. That is, it can be jumping the stages or expanding, interpreting, and clarifying the hidden meanings of the content from smaller units to larger ones on an appropriate stage. Besides, it can also be working out the solution to the questions while reading through contemplation and reflection and then moving onto the next stage. The process of clarifying meanings is well brought out under the hierarchical learning structure, from lower and easier one to more abstract and complicated one by degrees. However, reading does not end up at all when simple literal understanding of the content is accomplished. Because reading is not a simple action of understanding the literal meanings, rather it is an substantial step to achieve self-realization, careful and deliberative reading as well as reading to figure out the intension of a writer is considered to be a process of further meditation or reflection. 2. After reading, the reconstruction process is needed to fully understand the content and apply it in the real situation. In what ways can the readers reconstruct the content From the reading methodology in the Joseon Dynasty, it is beneficial to consult a variety of reference materials, to write down the important notions and to grasp the key elements. 3. The method of reading was quite various. In this study, the method of reading in the Joseon Dynasty was divided more specifically into the method to understand the content, method to reconstruct, and method to read according to the type of text. Through this study process it was notably found that individualization of method existed in the method of reading in the Joseon Dynasty according to the text and purpose of the book being read.
