In the book of Judges, Gideon and Jephthah were the judges who had a war with the gentiles and at the same time a conflict with the tribe of Ephraim. This study was conducted to examine how the leadership of the two judges and the anti-monarchy thoughts of the Deuteronomistic Historians appear in external wars and internal conflicts. The narratives of Gideon and Jephthah in Judges show the model of leadership needed for Israel in a kingless era in both positive and negative ways. The Deuteronomistic Historians promise that if Israel obeys God and keeps His commandments, God will be with them and give them victory. The author of Judges, who experienced the division and destruction of the monarchy caused by the kings, told the story of the judges and what leadership Israel needed. Internally, the Israeli leaders were leaders who mended fractures and strengthened the unity of the nation through forgiveness and harmony. Externally, they were charismatic leaders who shielded Israel from war. The Israelites overcame the feudal lords of Canaan, overthrew Pharaoh’s oppressive rule in Egypt, and finally built a state without a ruler. The Age of Judges is a representative dark age in the Old Testament. It was a time when ‘there was no king yet, so people did what they thought was right’. However, the author of the Book of Judges had already experienced monarchy. By dealing with the lack of leadership, he paradoxically shows hope for leadership recovery. The author who had personally experienced a catastrophic monarchy, was saying that even during the time of the Judges, YHWH was still ruling Israel as an invisible heavenly king.
