This article is about the theme of his motherland in the poetry of Lermontov, one of the poets and writers representing Russian Romanticism in the 19th century. In Lermontov’s work, “The Motherland,” which is related to patriotic motifs, is one of the main themes. For Lermontov, his motherland means Russia, where he was born and raised. The poet, on the one hand, loves all things about Russia and admires it, but on the other, shows a contradictory attitude on the world in which he harshly criticizes Russia as a country of serfdom, where ruthless and brutal monarchy power rules and forces all human wishes. To Lermontov’s poetic narrator, the struggle for human freedom, resistance to violence and oppression, and infinite love for his country are expressed as if they were meant to be. This study examines the trends of Russian scholars’ research achievements and how Lermontov influenced Russian poets and writers based on their respective characteristic arguments, and how it affected each other by contrasting the themes of Lermontov’s poem “The Motherland” with the works of Russian poets and writers. This paper gives an in-depth look at Lermontov’s early poems, “The Song of the Bard.” We look at the historical sources of the poem “The Song of the Bard” and the prototype of the motherland’s theme while introducing and analyzing the content of the poem, as well as the process of how the images and features of ‘the motherland’ are embodied and how the poet’s poetic world view is sublimated. For example, the textual tendency of Dekabrist poets to greatly influence Lermontov’s poetic world view and the contents of the subject hierarchy on the romantic ballad features that were a big trend in Russian literary history in the 19th century are being analyzed. It also focuses on the content of Yazikov’s “Song of the Tatar era in Russia,” the literary source of “The Song of Bard,” and the poet’s creative intent. It compares the historical circumstances of the foreign invasion that Russia experienced with the heroic exploits of ordinary soldiers in overcoming its difficulties and the similarities and differences between the role and position of the poetic narrator, an observer of the battle described in each poem. In conclusion, from early start-up activities to the end of his life, Lermontov implies a variety of emotions and nuances in the duplicity of the world on his ‘motherland’. He revealed the immaturity of his early emotional passion, but in his later work, he can confirm that his motherland’s image is reflected through a more stable and mature poetic outlook on the world. This article is significant in that it deeply looks at the motif and theme of “the motherland” shown in the works of Lermontov, a subject where no professional research has been conducted not only in Russia but also in the Western countries and Korea.
