아프리카 政黨 硏究 序說 = An Introductory th the African Political Parties

For some time, I have thought it would be worth while to write a short account of African political parties. Frankly speaking, however, due to the shortage of materials dealing with this sublect, this should be then simply an introductory essay on African parties. African political parties have developed at a startling rate during the period of decolonization.
Contemporary African political parties are, in almost cases, products of the period since the Second World war. The various African States in which parties have emerged differ from one another in their histories, ethnic composition, types of economic and social system, dominant religions beliefs and the like.
Naturally, the structure, programmes, and idelologies of African parties have been much influenced by Western Models. But they have also to be influenced by pre-colonial system. In societies of a high straitified type, where a broadly feudal type of structure has survived with relatively little modification through the colonial period, political porties have tended the outset to reproduce the traditional pattern of authority. A colonial situation tended to stimulate a multiplicity of political parties. But it also stimulate a national effort to create a single dominant party. Hence there is a tendency towords one-party dominance in newly independent African States. They have sought to tran form or modify the selationship of subordination and dominance between Africans and Europeans. While African political parties have originated in a variety of way, they have been extra-parliamentary in origin.
Frequently they have evolved out of, or been constructed around, existing associations of various types.
African partiesc an be soughly classified as mass parties and elite parties, One characteristic of African massparties has been the development of a multiplicity of functions over and above their conventional electoral and parliamentary functions.
African political parties have to be understood as essentially African institution and in the context of the particular social systems in which they have emerged.
While they havs borrowed techniques of organization and propaganda, as well as ideas, from Europe, American, and Asia, they have modified these to suit African purpose, just as they have adapted traditional institutions and situals to meet modern party political needs.
