The paper introduces, evaluates, and criticizes recent trend of philosophical understanding of st. Paul`s thought advocating universality of subjectivity in order that it can adumbrate a new paradigm of East-Asian cultural hermeneutic. The vantage point of this new trend, so-called `theological materialism`, is instigated by Badiou`s claim that Paul`s thought lays groundwork for new concept of universalism based on ontological status of `event` situated in `void`. Badiou insists that Paul retains tolerance of difference being indifferent to cultural differences, while advocating militant universality based on the dichotomy of spirit/flesh which traverses various differences of ethnicity, gender, class, nationality, religion, ecological location, etc. Yet Paul`s idea of event-oriented universality intensifies and overdetermines subjectivity eliminating any objectivity with regard to specific political identity. In this vein, this discussion raises the exegetical and hermeneutical issue of whether Paul`s implicit intention is to persuade one to concede to the exception of Jew`s political identity as chosen people or not. Right in response to this problem, it is worthwhile to remark that S. Zizek`s understanding of Paul`s thought sophisticates Badiou`s view of universality by appropriating Lacanian view of `void` as clarified by Hegelian dialectic. While appreciating Agamben`s critique of Badiou`s view of universality, Zizek`s paradoxical sense of universality advances ontological and ethical significance of the Remnant left out by the messianic division between the Whole and the Part. Yet these two scholars` standpoint of universality still does not clarify mode of political identity, coincided with their notion of universality replete with subjectivity pertaining to the ontological status of other`s particularity, which can, in turn, provide us with the clue for rightly generating East-Asian cultural hermeneutic. Hence, this article proposes new category of `specificity` and neologism `transcendental self-surmounting liminality` which best elucidate a new paradigm of East-Asian cultural hermeneutic, in which ethical subjectivity convincingly concurs with political identity relating to particularity. This claim will be corroborated by following rationales. At first, the exegetical discussion about Paul`s notion of universality with regard to ethnicity(Gal 3:28, I Cor. 12:12-13) delineates this concept of specificity, by which embodied identity, formulated by the participation in body of Christ, undergirds East-Asian cultural hermeneutics with significance of linkage of labor with ethnicity. Second, Paul`s view of universality entails hybrid character of political identity, once we reinterpret Paul`s thought pattern of ritual in light of Greco- Roman religious background, as mostly argued by the recent scholarly works (Wan. &Esler&Malina). Third, Paul unifyingly encourages us to identify ourselves as the weak rather than the strong as shown in I Cor. 8-10. Especially, the hermeneutical issues of the relationship between ethical subjectivity and cultural identity will be effectively delineated not only by the dynamic relationship between the historical setting of Paul`s church and Greco-Roman view of ethnicity, but also by Paul`s cultural-political theology of messianism. In conclusion, the proposed East-Asian cultural hermeneutic model reinterprets the theological significance of Paul`s substantial `universal militantism` as to solve specific problems of East Asian political identity and fight against the obstacles of global justice underlying Neo-liberal capitalism while incipiciently appropriating its specific strategy of Paul`s decolonizing resistance to induce the readers to take emacipatory praxis in their own situation.
