This study traces the appropriation of Christian language in the literature of Kim Myung-soon (金明淳, 1896~195?), a writer from early modern colonial Korea, and reads it as a process of becoming a writer in search of her own language. Existing studies have emphasized the female-victim counter-narrative in Kim's literature due to the autobiographical nature of her works and her biography as the daughter of a concubine who was a gisaeng, Korean geisha, a victim of rape, and media terrorism and malicious scandal. By pointing to the need to include Christianity in the autobiography of Kim Myung-soon's literature, as well as the possibility that there was a considerable amount of intertextuality with the Bible, this paper seeks to make this a focal lens for rereading Kim Myung-soon's literature.
In order to overcome the superficiality of the exploration of the relationship between literature and Christianity, to go beyond the materialism and one-sided identification of influences limited to the content aspect, Christianity should be seen as a special linguistic system with a belief that words and reality are united under the leadership of words. Whether you call it the Logos, the Oath, or the Sacred Word, Christianity is based on a belief in the power of language. Literature and Christianity are intricately intertwined at the point of attitudes and beliefs about language. They both value language and want to believe in the power of words. The difference is that Christianity returns to a single kind of signifier, while literature emanates from a wide variety of words that vary by era, author, work, and reader.
Kim understood that the core of Christian language is unity of speech, but she could not digest the idea of a happy match between language and reality when she witnessed the asymmetry of gender signs and the failure of love promises. From doubts to regrets, from content to form, Kim's literature is a deep and varied example of the appropriation of Christian language by women writers, and her response to and recycling of the "universal language" is important because it can be extended to other times and other writers. Finding Christian language in literary works and recontextualizing their meanings is necessary not only to find hidden codes for better interpretation, but also to reaffirm our faith in literature's ability to create reality in a new language.
Therefore, the main task of this paper is to find and reveal the intertextuality of the Bible in Kim's poetry, fiction, and essays. Here, intertextuality goes beyond references to phrases, expressions, motifs, and images to include formal aspects of religious language, such as prayer, prophecy, calls to repentance, and requests to listen.
The conflict between doubting the word and wanting to believe becomes the context for quotation and variation. The division of the speaking subject in Kim Myung-soon's literature, as depicted in Tansil and Joo-Young(「탄실이와 주영이」), began with the church and the mother's refusal to repent. In this autobiographical novel, TanSil's strange prayer is one of the original scenes in Kim's literature. The people in the church found her funny for not following the liturgy of prayer, but Tansil was unrepentant. Her adherence to her words reappears when, as an international student, Tansil redefines the words “joe”(sin) and “tarak”(fall). Even when describing the sexual assault that began the media terror that has plagued her entire life, she remembers the "new taste of writing a new letter: tarak."
This suspicion of not being able to trust a given word that promises love is reflected in the "thorny vine" motif that is frequently found in Kim's poetry. The unfruitful thorns, or briars, in Jesus' parable represent the field of the heart where the word is not accepted. Kim's poems and plays refer to Jesus' parable as an antithesis, pointing to violence as the definitive basis for inevitable mistrust.
Kim recognized her problem as a community problem. In her writing, which continued even after her distrust of the Word, we can see attempts at positive recycling of Christian language. Allusions to Elijah, female characters in rags, the garb of the prophets, and referring to Joseon and herself as some higher voice, can be read as the application of the voice form of the Judeo-Christian prophetic voice Kim uses the tone and imagery of prophets drawn from the Bible to call the Korean community to repentance.
Concern for the community led her to write her signature novel, Looking Back (「돌아다볼 때」) twice. In these stories, in which the love between a young woman and a male intellectual is thwarted by old customs and rumors, the important part of the story is not the love narrative but the reflection on the impossibility of community. The Rogue Theory, which appears in the middle of both novels, is a short theory of the impossibility of community. To summarize it in the language of the novels, a “Nara”(Nara is translated word of ‘kingdom’ in the Korean Bible) without separation is impossible because we are "bandits" to each other. I believe that the somewhat casual use of the words "kingdom" and "thief" are related to "kingdom" ("kingdom of God") and its related word, "thief," which were key words of Jesus. The serialized version, which ends with the protagonist's suicide, and the revised version, which ends with a hopeful life, show the extremes of doubt and the desire to believe, respectively.
Finally, Kim imbues the mother figure in her literature with a sacredness beyond mere affection or longing. The female artist characters in her novels pray to their deceased grandmothers in the same way that Christians pray to God the Father, or are protected by women and enjoy the peace of choosing their words, like "Mary's arms in nature." Kim wanted her literature to be guided by listening to "the words of thee (mother)," and she sang "the glory of the mother." This can be seen as an attempt to correct the asymmetry in the representation of the sacred occupied by Christianity. The sensation Tansil remembered from the Christian language was the peace that comes from aligning words with reality. Kim Myung-soon, who has been haunted by words all her life, finds peace in her own dialect, her mother's words, which she has developed through the literary practice of desiring the feminine form of the sacred.
