Yu, hailed in Chinese mythology as the hero who tamed floods, the founder of the Xia dynasty, and a legendary king of Confucianism, held a prominent place as an exemplary figure for monarchs to emulate in the Joseon Dynasty, during which period, Confucianism was the prevailing ideology. Consequently, Yu’s achievements were not only documented in literature but also depicted in paintings, as seen in records like the Veritable Records of the Joseon Dynasty and existing paintings. Joseon paintings featuring King Yu were primarily court paintings, specifically gamgyehwa (paintings for moral instructions), created to impart moral guidance to the king. While various types of paintings for moral instructions existed, those portraying ideal rulers like the Three Sovereigns and Five Emperors, as well as narrative illustrations of renowned kings such as Wenwang of the Zhou dynasty and Taizong of the Tang dynasty, were consistently popular subjects from the early to late Joseon period. Among these, Yu’s narrative paintings can be categorized into four themes: Dae Wu chisu (Yu the great controlling the flood), Chisu seonggong (Succeeds in flood control), Gegi gueon (Hanging the musical instruments and seeking advice), and Hwangryong buju(Yellow dragon lifting the boat). In Chisu seonggong, which depicts Yu humbly reporting his successful flood control to Emperor Shun, and Gegi gueon, where Yu hangs various musical instruments to seek advice from his advisors, Yu is portrayed as a realistic monarch with exceptional virtue. Conversely, in Dae Wu chisu, illustrating Yu’s flood control efforts, and Hwangryong buju, portraying Yu courageously confronting the unexpected appearance of a dragon while crossing a river in a boat, Yu’s divinity is emphasized, often with divine spirits assisting in flood control making appearances in the artwork. This article delves into the representation of Yu in Joseon Dynasty paintings, examining the nuances of his character between divinity and virtue based on the era, subject matter, and the agent and purpose behind their creation.
