계산본당 명도회의 조직과 그 운영 - 명도회 「회록」을 중심으로 -

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 계산본당의 청년단체인 명도회(明道會)의 실체를 추적했다. 1910년대 체계적인 기록으로 남은 명도회 회의록을 본격적으로 분석한 첫 작업이다. 이를 바탕으로 『드망즈 주교 일기』 등 관련 사료들을 참고하 여 이 단체의 조직과 목적, 회원구성과 회원 명단, 그 실제 운영, 구성원의 교회 내의 활동을 보았다. 명도회는 로베르 신부가 결성한 청년단체인데, 단체 결성 이듬해 대구 대목구가 설정되고 나서 초대 교구장인 드망즈 주교가 이 단체를 확대 전 문화하였다. 드망즈 주교는 ‘엘리트 청년’들을 뽑아서 훈련시키고자 했다. 그리고 이들을 통해 평신도들이 자발적으로 신앙을 익히고, 능력을 계발 하고 서로 힘을 모아 공동활동을 할 수 있기를 기대했다. 첫째, 명도회는 대구대목구에서 교회가 인정한 최초의 청년단체이다. 그들은 상세한 『규칙서』를 지녔고, 회합 때마다 이를 공부하면서 『규칙서』에 준해 운영되었다. 그리고 그들은 명도회관이란 전용 모임 장소와 사 무실을 갖추고 자치적으로 활동했다. 또 명도회는 기본 자금을 가지고 있 었으며, 이를 이용하여 이식(利息) 사업이나 사회복지 사업을 했다. 둘째, 명도회는 총회와 평의회로 구별되고, 총회 밑에 전교부, 음악부, 교풍회 등 여러 개의 부서가 있었다. 임원들 임기는 1년인데 회장, 부회장, 총무와 부총무, 회계, 서기, 도리강사, 지도강사 등으로 구성되었다. 그 외 간사 3명, 평의원이 15명 정도 있었고, 사무실을 지키는 상비원이 있었다. 임원들은 전부 회원들의 투표로 선출되었다. 셋째, 명도회는 명예회원과 일반회원이 있었으며, 청년회라 불리면서 도 15세부터 60세 넘는 이까지 포함하고 있었다. 명도회 인원은 90명 정 도인데, 10년 동안 「회록」에 나오는 이름을 통해 약 120여 명의 회원을 파 악할 수 있다. 5회 이상 결석한 회원은 제명되며, 입회 지원자는 주교의 허 락이 있어야 입회할 수 있다. 회원은 입회금을 내고, 매월 월회비를 냈다. 넷째, 명도회 회원들은 서로 인맥으로 연결되어 있었다. 이들은 애국계 몽운동을 하면서 형성된 인맥, 또 이들이 세운 협성학교나 해성학교와 서 로 인연이 닿아 있었다. 특히 회원들은 혼맥으로 연결되는 경우가 많다. 대 구의 첫 신자인 김현상 집안과의 혼맥으로 서상돈, 김찬수, 김종구 등이 한 계열이고, 서상돈의 동생인 서상정의 집안과 최정복, 정준수 등이 또 한 계 열이다. 개화 인사인 이일우와 이근우가 육촌간이며 이근우는 김현상 집 안으로 다시 서상돈과 연결된다. 유흥민은 서상돈의 데릴사위이다. 이외 에 이들은 대모, 대자 등의 신척(神戚)으로도 엮여있었을 것이다. 다섯째, 명도회원들은 신심함양과 선교를 목적으로 부단히 훈련했다. 그들은 평균 2주일에 한번 정도 회합을 가지며 성경공부와 기도생활, 회원 간 상호부조 등으로 신앙을 키웠다. 교풍회를 통해 회원들은 상호 좋은 생 활규범을 지키도록 서로 권고했다. 모임에서는 주교 강론 등을 듣고, 성경 을 읽고, 신앙적으로 민감한 주제들을 토론하며 직면한 사건들에 대해 회 의를 했다. 회원들은 이렇게 훈련하며 선교에 주력했다. 전교회장의 설치 는 그 대표적 예이다. 한편, 우리는 명도회 운영을 통해 드망즈 주교의 사목방침이 평신도를 적극 등용하고 그들에게 자율권을 보장했던 사실을 알 수 있다. 그럼에도 명도회는 남성만으로 구성된 단체였으며 단체의 자주권도 주교가 지향하는 방향에서만 허여되는 한계를 보이기도 한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This study traced the reality of Myeongdohoe(명도회, 明道會), a youth organization in Gyesan Cathedral. This is the first serious work in which we attempt to analyze The minutes of the Myeongdohoe meeting(회록, 會錄) that only remain as a systematic record of the youth group in 1910s. Based on this analysis, we try to better understand the organization and its purpose, its requirement of this organization, to get membership ; the composition, the membership list, the actual functioning of the organization, and their activities in the church. Myeongdohoe is a youth organization founded initially by Father Robert. Bishop Demange, the first diocesan Bishop, has a prominent role in the expansion and specialization of this organization the following year, on establishing the Apostolic Vicariate of Daegu. Bishop Demange’s desire was to select young Christaian, so-called “elite youth” and to give good training and Chistian formation to them. Bishop Demange expected that these elite young men could help lay people grow in their Chistian faith, as well as develop their abilities to collaborate, assist and work with one another. The detailed operation and activities of the Myeongdo group members are briefly summarized below First of all, Myeongdohoe, as a youth organization, has a detailed “Rulebook”, which was supposed to be the guide that members were to follow in order to act and operate in their daily lives. The rule was studied and learned in each of the meetings. The members of Myeongdohoe group have a their own special meeting office called Myeongdo Hall(명도회관, 明 道會館), and they had their own autonomy. They also have a basic economy fund, to cover the expenses of their missionary catechetical projects as well as those of social assistance. Second, the Myeongdohoe was organized into two bodies: the council and the general assembly. Under the general assembly, there were various categories of groups including those of Education, Music, and Courtesy Conduct(Kyopunghoe), etc. The executives have a one year term. The executives were the president, the vice-chairman, the general and the vice president responsible for general-affairs, the accountant, the secretary, the doctrine instructor and the guidance instructor. In addition, there were 3 secretaries and 15 council members, and they also had a permanent secretary who guarded the office. All executives were elected by a majority vote of the active members. Third, Myeongdohoe has two categories of members : honorary and general(active) members. Although it was called the Youth Association, it had to be mentioned that it included people from 15 to over 60 years of age. The membership of the Myeongdo Association is about 90. About 120 names of the members can be found in the written record of ‘the minutes of the Myeongdohoe meeting’ for 10 years. Members who are absent more than five consecutive times will be expelled. And applicants for admission could only be accepted after the approval of the bishop. Members must pay an admission fee and a monthly membership fee. Fourth, Myeongdohoe members were connected to each other through personal relationships. They had relationships that were formed during the patriotic enlightenment movement, as well as with the Hyeopseong School and Haesung School that they established. We found out that among members their common goals and group membership often lead to marital relationships. Sang-don Seo, Chan-soo Kim, and Jong-gu Kim are in a line with the family of Kim Hyun-sang, the first believer in Daegu. Il-woo Lee and Geun-woo Lee, who enlightened people, are second cousins, and Geunwoo Lee reconnects with Sang-don Seo in Kim Hyun-sang’s family. Heungmin Yoo is Seo Sang-don’s son-in-law. In addition, they may have been woven into godparents and godchildren. Fifth, the Myeongdo members had continuous training that sought to grow in their faith, devotion, and mission. They had regular meetings, an average every two weeks; they nurtured their faith through Bible study, prayer life, and mutual help among members. Through Courtesy Conduct(Kyopunghoe), the members support each other to observe a mutual standard of christian life model. At the meeting, they listened to the bishop's lectures, read the Bible, discussed sensitive religious issues and the events they faced in their daily life. They themselves were active missionaries who always read to go to the mission field. The establishment of ‘itinerant catechists’ is a clear and representative example of their missionary zeal. On the other hand, we discovered that Bishop Demange's pastoral policy was very active in recruiting lay people and at the same time guaranteed autonomy to operate through the activities of the Myeongdohoe. But this Myeongdohoe also has some limitations ; it was a group consisting only of men, and the sovereignty of the group was granted only in a Bishop’s direction of policy.
