This thesis is written for the purpose of evaluating the usefulness of the Directory for Worship. This is a question that relates directly to the Korean Presbyterian Church.
Traditionally the worship of the Presbyterian Church has two axes. The Book of Worship(Worshipbook) describes the various forms of worship, while the Directory for Worship deals with the principle of the Presbyterian worship.
Today the Korean Presbyterian Church is confronted with an identity crisis in how to serve God in worship. In order to produce a positive impact on future generations of worshippers in the Korean Presbyterian Church steps must be taken to evaluate and update our worship standards. The root of this crisis is the loss of our principle and spirit of worship. Now our church needs some new ways and directions to resolve it.
Christian worship developed through a process of changes and reformations throughout history to bring us to where we are today. Historically worship practices stood firmly on a foundation of sound church and theology principles. Occasionally worship principles and practices fell into misuse and corruption. Fortunately the Christian church rose to reform the worship and renewed it. At the end of the Middle Ages Christian worship was plagued with many problems. In worship there were human voices and stories instead of the Word of God, Latin language that people could not understand, and exaggerated mysteries that distracted people's attention. The worship was a monopoly of priests who performed the acts of worship while laypeople only looked on as spectators. Thus, people desired eagerly to change such worship and reformed it according to the Word of God.
The Westminster Directory for Worship is a product of this movement to found Christian worship on the Word of God. They wanted to recover the Word of God in their worship, but also thought that worship should be made by the principle and spirit of the Word of God. As a result they accomplished their purpose and made this historical document named "the Westminster Directory for Worship" in 1644 in England. This became the first Presbyterian directory for worship. Since that time the Presbyterian churches have traditionally looked to the Directory for Worship as their guide for worship.
In this study historical background serves as the basis for dissertation research. There is a historical process of development that connects the Westminster Directory for Worship with the American and the Korean directories. This process suggests the application and practical use of the Directory for Worship in the twenty-first century for the Korean Presbyterian Church.
The new century needs a suitable paradigm for this time. Therefore this research seeks to rediscover the meaning and value of the Directory, and propose a new model for the Korean Presbyterian Directory for Worship for this era.
The structure of this thesis is composed of eight chapters. The first chapter introduces the purpose of this study and the content and methodology of this dissertation. The second chapter briefly surveys Christian worship. In order to understand that, it describes the biblical understanding of worship, the resources of Christian worship, and the theological basis for worship. The third chapter deals with the Presbyterian Church and its worship. The content is made up of the history of the Presbyterian Church, the theology of the church, the principles of the Presbyterian worship, and the basic elements of the Presbyterian worship.
The next three chapters are about the directories for worship. The fourth chapter is on the Westminster Directory for Worship as the first of the Presbyterian Directory. This is a very important document because it is the origin of all the directories for worship. This chapter states the background and process of that, the structure, the content of the Directory, and the evaluation and influence of the Westminster Directory.
The fifth chapter moves to the American Presbyterian Directory for Worship. The Westminster Directory transferred to the American Church as the gospel went to that country from England. Pertinent to this study, the Korean Presbyterian Church received not only the Christian gospel from the American Presbyterian Church but also the Directory for Worship. So studying the American Presbyterian Directory is a meaningful prior step to understanding the Korean Presbyterian Directory. In this chapter we look at the history of the American Presbyterian Church and the developments and changes of the Directory for Worship, and then evaluate these directories.
The sixth chapter researches the Korean Presbyterian Directory for Worship. For this work the chapter examines the historical context of Korea Presbyterian Church, the theological background and the process of the formation of the Directory, the structure and the content of the 1919, 1934, 1983, and 2002 directories. Then it analyzes and evaluates all them.
Chapter seven analyzes the Directory for Worship comparatively and gives and provides proposals for change. First this chapter compares and analyzes each item among the Westminster, the American, and the Korean Presbyterian Directory for Worship. Next it discusses the relation between the sudden social change and Christian worship, and proposes the model for a twenty-first Century New Directory for Worship.
The final chapter presents conclusions and suggestions for the improvement of Korean Presbyterian Worship.
Postmodern society seeks changes in all areas. Christian worship is not exempt at that point. If our church appropriately corresponds to the situation, the future of our worship is hopeful. But if it fails to do that, Christian worship will confront many difficulties.
Now the Korean Presbyterian Church has to rediscover for her worship tradition and recover her identity in worship practice. In that point the role of the Directory for Worship is very valuable to lead direction of our worship. In addition it we should understand today's cultural situation and harmonize it with our worship. Then Presbyterian worship will be the true worship that God delightfully receives it.
"The liturgy(worship) is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; it is also the fount from which all her power flows."
