Natura, a Latin word from which the English word "nature" originated, originally meant "something conceived", in that the import of production based on a causal relationship between parents and their children was premised. In the West, this production was perceived as a providential causality in the Middle Ages, but as a mechanical one in the modern times. The history of the Western civilization and traditional metaphysics has been a process of struggle to conquer, rule and use nature by seizing this causality. As is generally known, an inevitable conclusion of such history is the destruction of nature as well as a crisis in the ecosystem, and a fundamental solution to them lies only in a drastic charge in the human's manner of looking at nature. In other words, we need to admit that nature, which cannot be disposed of at the discretion of human beings, exists according to its own rules, and to understand the relationship between nature and mankind as one of mutual dependence and respect, and to free ourselves from the being-centered, linear, substantial and fixed idea and to shift to the thinking of a multi-layered and insubstantial network. The goal of this study is to address the fact that the base of such a shift is Heidegger's. Thought (Hua-yen Buddhism) that perceived nature as physis (dharma-dhatu) and the ecological position in which nature is acknowledged as the ecosystem.
Mankind and nature are not divided in the viewpoint of looking at the world and nature as the physis, dharma-dhatu and the eco-system. This viewpoint contains in it a criticism against the view of modern Western people on man and nature. To modern man, the essence of mankind is in immaterial spirituality while nature is in material extension, thus both are separated from each other as an independent substance. But those who accept the Heideggerian aletheia interaction and Buddhist-ecological interdependence as the principle of the universe and consider nature as the physis, dharma-dhatu and the ecosystem advocate neither the theocentrism that serves the Creator as the Lord of all creation nor the modern anthropocentrism that wants to rule nature by rationalism and industrialism. They also do not welcome the nature-centered position of environmentalists who insist on entrusting all to nature by opposing any artificial interruption, nor the idea of human-centered environmentalists who argue that nature is valuable for humans and it can be protected only by humans. If then it is the case, the desirable relationship between nature and humans should be that of emptiness in which neither side claims centrality, and so it should be a relationship where no ruling and no subordination exist. Only in this relationship can we get over inhumanization of humans and unnaturalization of nature, and make humans more human and nature more natural.
