The purpose of this work is to study the extended meanings of basic color language adjectives ‘black, white, and red’ in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese based on the corpus. Basic color language refers to 11 kinds of color words that exist in common in various languages. The color adjectives that are commonly used in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese are the ‘black, white, and red’ series. In the process of using color language, there is a part where people recognize and interpret the meaning of the same color language differently under the influence of each country's culture. This part can be seen as a meaningful difference in the cognition of color words.
Like other vocabulary words, there are dictionary meanings and extended meanings. Dictionary meaning refers to the meaning of words or writings based on the dictionary. The extended meaning consists of the proximity by metonymy and the similarity by metaphor (Bae Do-yong 2002). The dictionary meanings of color words are almost identical, but the three languages express the same object in relation to different color words, which represents different extended meanings. The extension of meaning occurs by metaphors and metonymy, and most of the extended meanings express abstract emotions, feelings, and concepts. When looking at the co-occurrence relationship of color words, the extension of meaning mainly appears through people, thoughts, emotions, and environments. These co-occurrence words can be largely divided into living things, inanimate objects, abstracts, and movements. Therefore, this paper divides the color language's co-occurrence words into living organisms, inanimate objects, abstracts, and movements, and examines the relationship between co-occurrence words and expansion meanings, while analyzing the extended meanings of each series in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese based on these classifications.
Looking at the results of this paper, in the case of the ‘black’ series, the three languages all show a pattern of combining with different types of co-occurrence words, but they commonly imply passive extended meanings such as 'race, impure, insidious, unidentified, fire, injustice, and illegality'. The ‘black’ series also has a unique meaning in each of the three languages. In Japanese, there is a meaning of ‘depression and corruption’ that is not in the other two languages. While in Chinese, there are extended meanings such as ‘large amount, shock, despair, certainty, unfairness, loss of face, busyness, and inability to grasp the situation’. In addition, the Korean word ‘black’ has special extended meanings such as ‘unfortunate, mysterious, unsophisticated, and mysterious’.
Next, unlike the ‘black’ series, it can be seen that the ‘white’ series is commonly recognized as a noble color in the three languages in relation to images such as cleanness, beauty, and purity. On the other hand, ‘white’ also has an image that there is no blood, so it is sometimes recognized as a negative meaning such as bad luck and death. These negative extended meanings are observed relatively more in Chinese than in both Korean and Japanese.
Lastly, in the case of the ‘red’ series, a common meaning of 'blood and health' is found in all three languages. In addition, a common point is observed that it is used as a symbol of socialism due to the strong image of the ‘red’ series. However, it is found that both Korean and Japanese have relatively fewer expressions that symbolize socialism than Chinese. This is due to the social and cultural environment in which Korea and Japan operate under an economic system called 'capitalism' unlike China. In particular, in Korean, there is a difference that red color has a metaphor for fear or rejection due to inter-Korean relations.
Through the above contents, it is confirmed that there are different parts of the perception in Korean, Chinese, and Japanese about basic colors. In this paper, only three color words are studied, but there are differences in other color words. In the future, by investigating various color words, we will examine what differences can be seen in the extended meaning and where the differences come from.
