The purpose of this study is analyze physiological reactions that change during exercise in high temperature and humidity environments by cooling methods using wind, water and alcohol, and tried to provide a means to reduce dehydration in high temperature and humidity environments. The subjects of this study were nine healthy men in their 20s who could exercise due to the heat, and those who had no history of heat-related diseases and did not receive adaptation training. Each participant participated in a total of three experiments, radio-allocating under the conditions of wind-based cooling (NS: None Spray), wind-water-based cooling (WS: Water Spray), and wind-based cooling (ES: Ethanol Spray).
The subjects conducted a preliminary examination to check the maximum oxygen intake and set the intensity of exercise in this experiment. Exercise intensity was set to be 70 percent higher than oxygen intake. This experiment was conducted in the order of stable period, exercise period (5 minutes), and rest period (1 minute and 30 seconds), and was conducted in an intermittent exercise program that repeats exercise period and rest period four times. A stabilizer measures a stable heart rate, stable oxygen intake, undressed weight, eardrum temperature, and skin temperature at a stable room temperature, and proceeded with exercise after the stabilization measurement. The exercise apparatus only measured the degree of awareness of exercise and heat. The exercise equipment is an environmental chamber set at high temperature and humidity (29-31℃, 75-85%) and has a rest period of 1 minute and 30 seconds after treadmill exercise for 5 minutes. During the rest period, only the eardrum temperature and skin temperature were measured. After repeating the exercise device and the rest device four times in total, all the exercises were completed, and the amount of sweat during the exercise was measured by measuring the weight of the undressed clothes.
Skin temperature (NS: 0.83°C, WS: 1.35°C, ES: 0.19°C) and sweating amount (NS: -1.07%, WS: -1.08%, ES: -0.85%), motor awareness (NS: 11.67, WS:11.11, ES:10.22), and heat sensation (NS:11.61, WS:11, ES:9.44) showed significant difference (p<0.0).
This study tried to reduce excessive stimulation and side effects and time and space costs in previous studies by applying cooling methods using alcohol and wind when exercising in a hot and humid environment. In the cooling method of this study, the skin temperature is lower than that of water and sweat due to evaporation due to low specific heat of alcohol even in high humidity, and the amount of sweating is also reduced. Based on these results, cooling using alcohol is considered to have a positive effect on the prevention of dehydration and heat disease, and this type of cooling is considered to be effective in preventing heat disease and dehydration in sports events (marathon cycles) and outdoor exercise in hot and humid summer environments.
