Introduction
Personal protective equipment should be used to reduce the likelihood of infection when performing chest compression. Due to weight of apparatus and their discomfort, increased fatigue over time, increased temperature in equipment and difficulty breathing there are significant difficulties in carrying out accurate missions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of the change of compression shift time on the quality of chest compression quality when wearing PPE.
Material & Method
All 34 participants were put on Level D and PAPR, and the experiment was conducted using an mannequin that can measure the quality of chest compressions. Each participant conducted a total of 3 sessions. In the first session, a 2-minute chest compression followed by a 2-minute rest was repeated twice, and in the second session, a 1-minute chest compression followed by a 1-minute rest was repeated four times. Vital signs were measured before and after each session, and subjective fatigue after each session was assessed using the Borg scale. In the last session, each participant performed chest compressions for 2 consecutive minutes, and CPR quality was measured every minute to determine the change in chest compression quality over time. For statistical analysis, SPSS version 22,0 was used. Power analysis was used for the required sample size, and shapiro-wilk test was used for normality test. The wilcoxon-signed rank test was used as a nonparametric test between the two groups, and a p value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.
Result
Compared to the two-minute shift group, the one-minute shift group showed a result indicating good compression quality in terms of accuracy and absolute value of the chest compression depth, which was found to be statistically significant. In the chest compression experiment for 2 consecutive minutes, it was found that the quality of chest compressions was lower after that than in the first minute, which is in line with the significant results obtained through the comparison of the first and second sessions.
Conclusion
According to the results of this study, we suggest that CPR with PPE should be performed by the different standard of current 2-min to 1-min cycles for two rescuers due to statistically significant reduction in the quality of chest compression.
