This paper purports to identify some religiosity in Light in August. one of William Faulkner's major novels which have been considered to strongly reflect the atheistic tendency in the modern world. Religiosity is not meant to refer to any institutionalized belief system, but it means a certain point of view where human beings are immured in time which is the source of their suffering, and they aspire to return to a dimension where suffering ceases and self-identification is achieved, that is, eternity.
In the novel. Joe Christmas, Hightower, and Byron Bunch are those who suffer from the finitude in time and finally define themselves from a proper perspective. Furthermore, their journey to the final realization implies the religious ritual which repeats the eternal moment when people do not suffer any more and they see themselves face to face. Joe Christmas's suffering comes from his suspicion that he might be a black. Such racial ambiguity makes it impossible for him to spiritually stabilize himself at home anywhere. It makes him float on the street all his life. It is because he himself is prejudiced against the Black, which is produced by the southern history, a continuation of linear time. He also suffers from a distorted view on women which is formed by his early experience in his own personal history. Finally he arrives at the eternal moment when he perceives time to be circular, which retains the basic frame of the religious ritual. Both Hightower and Bunch undergo a similar ritualistic experience at a certain frozen moment they realize who they are, and what they are guilty of. When they go back to each different ordinariness, they turn out to be completely different beings, more enlarged and enhanced. In terms of such parallelism to the religious ritual. religiosity in the novel is clearly identified.
