This study aims to explore the gosainmulhwa(故事人物畵; paintings of stories involving famous historical figures) and doseokinmulhwa(道釋人物畵; paintings of Taoist immortals or eminent Buddhist monks) of Korean artist Kim Eun-ho (金殷鎬, 1892-1979). As is widely known, Kim developed as an artist through Chosen Fine Arts Exhibition during Korea’s period of colonial occupation by Japan. He submitted works of various genres to the exhibition, but gosa and doseokinmulhwa did not feature prominently among these – in fact Seonnimullye(宣尼問禮), submitted to the 16th exhibition in 1937, is the only such example. Although this was a non-mainstream category of painting and hardly ever submitted to the official exhibitions that represented Kim’s work, many examples of it survive. These were painted on commission, indicating that Kim probably enjoyed healthy demand for his gosa and doseok inmulhwa.
The subjects of Kim Eun-ho’s gosa and doseok inmulhwa were somewhat diverse, including Taoist immortals, well-known figures such as Tao Yuanming and LiBai; literary content such as Rhapsody on the Red Cliff (赤壁賦) and Rhapsody on the Sounds of Autumn (秋聲賦); and historical content such as Liu Bei’s three visits to Zhuge Liang. Kim’s gosa and doseokinmulhwa show subtle, neat compositions and exquisite skill.
Kim’s gosa and doseok inmulhwa are almost all the same in terms of style. However, it appears clear that those painted for royalty or government exhibitions are more delicately expressed than regular commissioned works. Moreover, works commissioned by regular clients show differences according to the identity of the client. These differences are apparent more in terms of size of work, composition and quality of detail than in terms of painting style, suggesting that Kim was a thoroughly professional painter. I judge that these differences between works was caused by their production according to the requests and demands of clients, which strongly influenced the quality of the works.

Gosa and doseok inmulhwa, a popular genre from the Joseon period onwards, were widely produced. After liberation from Japanese colonial rule, however, it can be said that only Kim Eun-ho and his student, Kim Gi-chang, painted such works. The reason Kim Eun-ho was able to produce so many works until his death in 1979 was that, as an artist, he constituted a link between modernity and contemporaneity. Some criticize his gosa and doseok inmulhwa for lacking in creativity and individuality, but Kim nonetheless played a leading role in modernizing traditional painting. It is also undeniable that he was unique in his capacity to meet clients’ demands for traditional works.
