The purpose of this study is to review how the mimetic desire would be used in the drama therapy. The mimetic desire is based on René Girard's theory. He sees to it that since there exists a model mediating the mimesis, the subject emulates model's mimesis and thereby, realizes it.
In order to examine the relevancy between mimetic desire and drama therapy, the researcher reviewed various theories about mimesis and desire to examine the characteristics and mechanism of mimesis and its characteristics and functions. Thus, it was confirmed that the mimesis would serve to form subject's identity, while enhancing his/her relationship with others in such mechanism of stimulation-observation-discovery-pleasure and forming his/her identity. In addition, the researcher reviewed Jacques Lacan's alterity, René Girard's triangle of desire, and Jean-Michel Oughourlian's universality of the desire of mimesis and thus, confirmed that it would be the subject who would form a relationship with the others as the philosophers contends. Through such reviews, the researcher could suggest the meanings of the mimetic desire as follows;
First, the mimetic desire is a mechanism whereby subject emulates others' mimesis.
Secondly, the mimetic desire consists of mimesis and hints in the human relationships.
Thirdly, the mimetic desire serves to form individuals' identity.
Next, the researcher examined how the mimetic desire could be used for the drama therapy by dividing the drama therapy into drama therapist's roles, process of the drama therapy and participant's diagnosis. Thus, the following facts could be inferred.
First, therapist should be positioned as the model of the mimetic desire to deal with his/her selected mimesis. Namely, just as the participant emulates model's mimesis in his/her ordinary life, so the participant should be urged to emulate therapist's hinted mimesis. Here, the therapist needs to transform and hint participant's selected mimesis in a healthy way in the place of the model.
Secondly, the researcher divided the therapeutic tools dealing with the mimetic desire into body, emotion, role and story, and thereby, reviewed the relation between drama and life, and then, examines such therapeutic factors as the resonance, aesthetic distance and catharsis in terms of existence, balance and insight of therapist and participant.
Thirdly, the triangle of mimesis is used for diagnosing the participants, and thereby, three types could be determined.
Type 'A' - The participant is isolated, while the flow of desire of mimesis itself is blocked.
Type 'B' - The model is blocked, while there exists only the mimesis selected by the participant.
Type 'C' - The participant is sticked to the model, and thus, he/she could not grasp the substance of his/her mimesis.
Lastly, the goal and direction of the drama therapy for each type are set as follows;
Type 'A' - The desire of mimesis should be activated. To this end, the participant needs to be awakened of his/her senses and thereby, he/she should be encouraged to perform a simple mimesis. The condition is similar to the degeneration, so it would be necessary to urge him/her to feel a self-pity first.
Type 'B' - A model who can mediate the selected mimesis should be established. To this end, it is necessary to examine why the participant has lost his/her model. Moreover, it is necessary to urge him/her to become a model for himself/herself and thereby, encourage him/her to experience the realization of his/her mimesis.
Type 'C' - The participant needs to separate himself/herself from the fixed model to pursue a genuine self-mimesis. To this end, the participant should be able to deal with the process whereby he/she has been sticked to the model, while being aware of the distorted memory related with the model.
The common goal of therapy for all the three types is to open the blocked flow through the drama therapy so that the desire of mimesis can be circulated.
All in all, this study has confirmed that the desire of mimesis is a useful structure for the drama therapy. Namely, the therapist should be positioned as a model mediating the mimesis, hinting it incessantly to the participant, so that he/she can emulate the mimesis hinted by the therapist. This study may well be significant in that it diagnoses the participant by using the desire of mimesis and thereby, that it has constructed a specific and effective drama therapy work mechanism.
