근대기 익산 지역 불교회화 연구

국문 초록 (Abstract)

익산 지역의 불교회화 현황을 사찰을 중심으로 파악하고 작품을 소개하는데 목적이 있다. 또한 작품 에 기록된 화기를 통해 불화 제작에 참여했던 화승들에 대해 살펴보았다. 익산 지역에 현전하는 불화 의 수량은 8개소 20점으로 적은 편이지만, 작품분석 및 화승의 영향관계를 파악함으로써 지금까지 연 구가 미진했던 부분을 보완하려 하였다. 특히 19세기 후반에서 20세기까지의 불화 제작 현황을 통해 익산 지역의 문화적 맥락을 이해하는 데 도움을 줄 것이다.
위 시기에는 다양한 화승 집단이 활동하며 각 지역의 대표를 맡고 있었다. 계룡산파로 알려진 금호 약효, 보응문성, 금용일섭 등은 근대기 불교화단에서 독특한 도상과 화풍으로 이름을 날렸다. 그와 반 대로 금호약효의 전통 화풍을 유지하고 계승하며 묵묵히 족적을 남긴 호은정연이 있었다. 이 시기는 지역을 넘나들며 서로 영향을 주고받았기 때문에 특정 화파라고 할 수는 없지만 호은정연과 동시기 익산 지역을 대표할만한 화승은 진월천호와 진음상오가 있다. 이들 역시 앞선 전통을 계승하기도 하 고, 변용하기도 하였다. 또한 초본의 활용으로 동일 도상으로 제작된 불화가 많았다.
이렇듯 익산 지역의 불교회화는 작품 수는 적지만 불교화단에서 굵직한 화승들의 참여로 19~20세 기의 시대 양식과 지역 유파의 도상을 공유했던 모습을 살펴볼 수 있었다. 중국 판본의 수용, 개인의 역량을 뽐낼 수 있었던 하단탱화 등에서 화승별 특징도 손꼽을 수 있다. 계룡산파의 영향은 현대 화맥 까지도 이어지며 익산 지역에 있는 불화에 흔적을 남기고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper aims to identify the current state of Buddhist paintings in the Iksan region with a particular focus on temples as well as introduce a variety of works. Additionally, it examines the hwaseung (monk painters) who participated in the creation of these Buddhist paintings through the analysis of hwagi (painting inscriptions) recorded on the artworks. Although there is a relatively small number of extant Buddhist paintings in the Iksan area, with 20 works across eight sites, this study attempts to address gaps in previous research by exploring the connection between the number of works and the influence of the hwaseung. This paper is particularly useful in understanding the cultural context of the Iksan region through its study of Buddhist painting production from the late 19th to the 20th century.
During this period, various hwaseung groups actively worked and represented their respective regions. Members of the group known as the Gyeryongsan School such as Geumho-Yakhyo, Boeung-Munseong, and Geumyong-Ilseop gained prominence for their unique iconography and painting styles within the modern Buddhist art scene. In contrast, there were others like Hoeun-Jeongyeon who left their mark by staying steadfast in maintaining and preserving the traditional painting style of Geumho-Yakhyo. The constant exchange and mutual influence practiced amongst painters traveling across regions make it difficult to classify individuals under a specific school. However, the most prominent group of hwaseung to represent the Iksan area undoubtedly includes Hoeun-Jeongyeon, along with his contemporaries Jinwol-Cheonho and Jineum-Sango. These painters both upheld and transformed preexisting traditions. Additionally, the use of sketches led to the production of many Buddhist paintings featuring the same iconography. Although there is a limited number of works in the Iksan region, the active involvement of influential hwaseung from the 19th to 20th centuries highlights the shared iconographic and stylistic elements of the era and regional schools. Simultaneously, the hwaseung were also able to establish their individual styles through various ways such as the use of Chinese woodblock prints and the genre of hadan-tanghwa (hanging paintings), which aptly showcases each painter’s skill and abilities. The influence of the Gyeryongsan School continues in modern Buddhist painting, leaving a lasting impact on the Buddhist paintings found in the Iksan region.
