The Gwangju Students' Independence Movement held on November 3, 1929 was the largest-scaled student movement in Korea in that students themselves participated in the movement with a strong sense of mission to free the country which was under the domination of Japan and that the movement began in Gwangju and then developed into the nation-wide movement.
In 1920s, Korean society was under repression by Japanese colonialism and students were oppressed by discriminative education system. As a rebellious attempt to escape from being repressed by the educational policy under Japanese colonialism, organizations voluntarily composed by students were created. Given that there were a host of ideologies at that time, ideological organizations were formed. Though students developed student movements while belonging to various organizations which were separated from each other, they shared the same goal to make the nation achieve independence from Japanese domination. With active movements by the student organizations, rebellious movements against Japanese colonialism were developed, and in the midst of such movements, collision between Korean students and Japanese students broke up in Gwangju which triggered the large-scaled demonstration.
At the time when students' movement was developed in an invigorative manner, the notion of Socialism was flown from the western society into Korea, attracting attentions of intellectuals. Students also showed keen attentions toward this new ideology, and consequently Socialism significantly influenced over student movements. However, the fundamental class of Socialism was mostly composed of farmers, and therefore Socialism was not suitable to be applied to domestic social structure in which it was hard to establish a laborer class and a capitalist class. Notwithstanding the above, students incorporated Socialism into democratization movement and accepted this ideology as one of the means to further develop and specify student organizations. Despite Socialism was not perfectly matched with the situation Korean society faced with, such ideology was accepted as one of the means of students movement, since students themselves understood the ideology and accepted it in a critical manner in consideration of the circumstances of the Korean society which was under domination of Japan. In addition, socialists did not have significant influences at that time. In the process of students movement, socialists had a position as a leading group, but students' organizations played a substantial roles and these organizations suggested a direction for the movement which was sporadic to become a larger-scaled demonstration.
In this regard, it could be seen that the Gwangju Students' Independence Movement was developed influenced by autonomous and active student organizations, not by leading roles of Socialism. Furthermore, Socialism was not suitable for Korean society, and therefore it deems not reasonable that such large-scaled movement was initiated by Socialism. The view that the movement was mostly influenced by Socialism due to the mere fact that socialists were in a leading group of the movement, and thus the movement had a socialistic feature seems overestimation of the roles of Socialism. Taking a comprehensive look into the movement, it seems that Socialism was one of the factors which further advanced and developed students' movement.
