This paper examines the historical theses of top aids of the emperors and other kings of Western Jin. It focuses on a theory of vicissitude of kingdom presented by Tang Tai Tzueng and Fang Xuan Ling with Gi Yue and Shi Chen Yue. The paper draws the following conclusions. First, Emperors Xuan, Jing, and Wen Di came to power by defeating Wu and Shu with their military and other related strategies. By exercising a great deal of generosity and integrity and appointing virtuous officials, they were able to establish the foundation of the Jin Dynasty. To the contrary, Emperor Wu Di was arrogant, derelict, and thus made the kingdom open to the intrusion of inefficient bureaucrats including in-law groups. He failed to abdicate the prince and his wife and Lieu Yan Haii, who had to be removed from power. This led to the rebellion of eight kings, and the eventual collapse of the Kingdom. Fang Xuan Ling expressed his warning against these dangerous developments, which would bring about the collapse of the kingdom. Second, Fang developed a divine theory of emperor, which served Emperors Xuan and Wu Di. In addition, he recommended that the emperors work continuously for virtue and rule the kingdom in accordance to the virtue. He admonished the emperors to recultivate Confucianism rather than Daoism and to replace flatters with virtuous men. In short, Fang argued that divine emperors rule the kingdom according to the divine will and set himself away from men of limited ability and morality. Third, Empresses Iang and Jia lacked chastities. Jia, in particular, was pernicious. She killed the prince out of jealousy and induced the revolt of eight kings. Moat of the kings were evil-minded, arrogant, and spendthrift. They fell in vortex of political struggle and even borrowed forces from northern barbarians. In-laws and their favoritism added the turmoils of the kingdom. Fang warned against all of these deve lopments as a sign of the fall of dynasty. In summary, Fang Xuan Ling and other historians during Gen Guan period developed a theory of vicissitude of dynasty by addressing on a divine theory of emperor and other mysticism. They were the historians who wanted to establish an ideal kingdom based on confucius virtue.
