현대 국어의 의미확장 연구 = (A) study on the Meaning Extension in Modern Korean

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 현대 국어의 의미확장에 대해서 인지언어학적 관점에서 체계적으로 살펴보려는 데 목적을 둔다. 실제로 국어 연구에서 다년간 통사론의 중심연구 경향으로 의미론의 연구에 소홀함이 있었음을 인정하지 않을 수 없다. 필자는 그 원인이 현대 학문의 이론 의존적인 성격에 기인한 것으로 판단한다.
국어 연구에서는 이론 의존적인 성격으로 말미암아 개념상 큰 대립이 있어 왔는데, 필자는 이것들을 어떻게 상호 관련시키고 조화시켜 균형성을 획득하는가가 언어 연구에 있어서 선행되어야 할 중요한 기초 과제라고 생각한다. 그것에 대한 지금까지의 양립 불가능한 이해는 다음과 같다.
(1) 철학적 →이성주의 : 경험주의
(2) 심리학적 →언어능력 : 인지능력
(3) 언어학적 →순수언어학적 의미 : 백과사전적 의미
위의 양립 불가능한 이해는 각 시기의 국어 연구에서 암묵적으로 인정하거나 지나쳐 온 개념들이다. 환언하면 그것은 이론 의존적인 성격으로 말미암아 당연시해 왔다는 것이다. (1) 철학적 관점에서 볼 때, 이성주의(객관주의) 시각으로써 언어를 보는 모형은 모든 언어 현상이 하나의 모형으로 설명될 수 있어야 한다는 것이다. 그런데 다양한 언어 현상을 접하면서 하나의 모형으로 살필수 없는 언어 현상이 많이 부각되고 발견되었다. 따라서 다원화된 시각의 필요성을 인정할 필요가 있다. 지금까지 이론적인 측면에서 볼 때, 이성주의와 경험주의 논의는 양자가 각 극단으로 치우쳐 이해되고 있음을 인정하지 않을 수 없는데 본 논문은 철학적인 시각에서 '체험주의'(experientialism)라는 새로운 시각에 바탕을 두고자 한다. (2) 심리학적 관점에서는 언어 연구의 성립 근거로써, 순수 언어학자들의 입장은 인지능력과는 무관한 '언어능력'의 독립성을 주장하고, 심리학자들은 언어능력이 일반 인지능력과 독립적일 수 없다는 주장을 펴 보임으로써 평행선을 달리고 있다. 본 논문은 이 두 능력의 상호 보완성을 인정하는 입장에 서고자 한다. 그것은 우리 두뇌의 능력에 객관성과 주관성을 상호 인정하는 유연한 입장에 선다는 것을 의미한다. (3) 언어학적 의미론의 관점에서는 순수한 언어적 지식 이외의 지식을 받아들일 수 없다는 순수 언어학적 입장과는 달리 백과사전적 지식을 받아들일 수 있다는 입장에 서 있다. 그것은 우리 '삶의 양식 으로서의 진리는 모두 우리의 지식일 수 있다는 근거에서 이다.
이와 같은 바탕 위에서 본 논문은 현대 국어에 편재하는 다양한 합성어, 다의어, 문법화 범주에 드러나는 의미확장 등을 집중적으로 조명하고자 한다. 본고에서 말하는 의미확장 현상은 언어에만 적용되는 것이 아니라 우리의 사고도 은유적 원리에 근거하여 의미를 창출하고 사용하고 있다는 것을 의미한다.
본고에서 살핀 의미확장 현상을 검토하기 위한 언어적 가설을 잠정적으로 세워보면 다음과 같다.
(4) ㄱ. 물리적 ·구체적인 요소는 영상 도식(image schema)을 형성하며 이것은 우리가 지각하고 경험할 수 있는 영역이다.
ㄴ. 영상 도식은 은유적 투사(metaphorical projection)를 통해 추상적 ·문화적 영역으로 확장될 수 있다.
위의 가설에 드러난 개념들은 최근 '상상력 이론'을 전개해 가고 있는 M. Johnson의 논의 개념들을 받아들인 것이다. 이 부류의 철학적 경향을 '체험주의'라고 부르고 있는데, 체험주의의 주된 주장은 우리의 모든 사고와 이해의 뿌리가 우리의 신체적 활동에 기초해 있으며, 더욱 복잡하고 추상적인 사고는 이를 토대로 확장된다는 것이다. 체험주의에 대한 이해는 이성주의 대 경험주의의 양극단의 대립적인 양상으로부터 우리의 이해에 양극단의 시각이 공존할 수 있다는 좀더 포괄적인 해명과 바탕을 마련해 갈 수 있을 것이다.
이러한 시각을 바탕으로 본 논문에서 보인 언어적 범주들의 귀결은 다음과 같다. 먼저, 합성어에서의 의미확장은 사물의 명명 단계에서 우리의 개념화 과정이 출현하고 있고, 그런 인식은 외부 사물과 전혀 관련이 없는 것이 아니라 우리의 지각적, 운동수행적 능력이 모두 중요하게 부각한다는 점을 인정해야 한다는 것이다. 즉 '자연화된 인식론'을 인정해야 한다는 것이다. 또한 추상적 인지의 단계도 우리의 신체적·물리적 활동에 근거해서 확장되는 것을 언어의 쓰임을 통해서 이해할 수 있다. 그리고 확장의 기재로 은유와 환유가 중요하게 작용한다는 점도 빼놓을 수 없다.
다의어 범주에서는 중심적 의미와 비중심적 의미 사이에 비대칭적인 관계가 놓여 있으며, 그 사이에는 원형 효과가 드러난다. 그리고 중심의미와 비중심의미 사이는 독자적으로 존재하는 의미들이 아니라 서로 관련된 의미망을 형성하고 있음을 동사 '잡다'를 통해서 살펴볼 수 있다.
문법화 범주에서는 의미가 한 범주에서 고정되어 있는 것이 아니라 범주와 범주 사이에서도 늘 변화하고 있다는 것을 살필 수 있다. 또한 문법화의 확장경향이 다음과 같이 드러나고 있음을 살펴볼 수 있다.
첫째, 문법성의 기준에서 볼 때 어휘적 표현이 문법적 표현으로 전이해 가고, 덜 문법적인 표현이 더 문법적인 표현으로 되어 간다. 이러한 변화는 정도의 면에서도 문법성의 정도가 더해짐으로써 전체적으로 어휘적 표현에서 문법적 표현으로 확장되어 간다고 볼 수 있다.
둘째, 구체적 영역에서 추상적 영역으로의 변화이다. 구체적인 영역에서는 인간의 관점에서 사물을 보는 것이 일반적인데, 이를 기준으로 '사람 > 대상 > 행위 > 공간 > 시간 > 질'로의 변이가 주로 이루어진다.
셋째, 형태 구조의 기준에서 보면 구절 및 통사적 구조가 형태소적 구조로 변해가고 있다. 또, 내용어에서 형식어로의 변화 과정을 보이는데, 이러한 과정은 넓은 시각에서 의미확장이라고 간주된다.

The aim of this study which it sees the meaning extension of Korean tries to observe is a place system. From Korean research with research center tendency of many years syntax it is negligent it is it will not be able to recognize actually in research in the semantics center. This paper judges with the fact that cause originates to the objection depend character of today study. From Korean research it came from with objection depend character and at concept there was it came but big opposition and, this study the trade name relates these how and it harmonizes and a balance characteristic it acquires there to be to language research, it precedes and percentage as the fundamental subject which is important it thinks. Compatibility until of the now against it the gain and loss which is impossible with after words is same.
