매킨토시 작품에 나타난 공간표현 특성에 관한 연구 = A Study on the Spatial Characteristics in the Works of C. R. Mackintosh

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Charles Rennie Mackintosh stated “The only true modern individual art in proportion in form and in colour, is produced by an emotion, produced by a frank and intelligent understanding of the absolute and true requirements of a building or object" in his lecture on the subject of 'Seemliness’. This state shows that emotion was one of important factors in his design, and his consideration about function was influenced by Ruskin who instructed "he first thing to be required of a building is that it shall answer its purpose completely, permanently, and at the smallest expense...". Mackintosh believed art is able to realize real life with creative imagination, so he thought nature as not only design motive by its external appearance but also stimulant to reflect inner world of artists. Through analysis and appreciation of nature, he made Mackintosh style that showed originality and artistic ability in architecture, furniture and interior design. In addition to, he included social and psychological analysis in his style to make modern design works. The best of Mackintosh's work displays a sublime poise, where decorative and structural aspects are held in delicate balance. He was among the first to conceive decorative simplicity, and the anticipatory nature of his work has kept it fresh and original to this day.

찰스 레니 매킨토시는 그의 강연 ‘고상함(Seemliness)’의 내용 중 “현대 예술에서 진정한 형과 색은 감정과 건물 또는 대상의 순수하고 절대적인 요구를 이해함에 의해 만들어진다.” 라고 이야기 하고 있다. 이 부분은 그가 영향을 받은 것으로 알려진 존 러스킨의 “건물에 있어서 가장 필요로 하는 것은 적은 예산 속에서도 그 목적에 완벽하고 변함없이 부합되도록 하는 일이다.”란 언급과 비교할 때, 기능에 관한 합일에는 동의하면서도 감정의 문제가 그의 디자인 과정에서 중요한 인자임을 표명하고 있다. 매킨토시는 창조적 상상력을 지닌 예술이 진정한 삶을 깨달을 수 있다고 믿었기에 그는 자연의 외적 형태를 디자인 모티브로 생각하였을 뿐만 아니라 예술가의 내적 세계를 반영하는 자극으로 생각하였다. 자연의 분석과 이해를 통해 그는 건축, 가구, 인테리어 디자인에서 예술적 능력과 독창성을 보여주는 그의 스타일을 만들었다. 게다가 그는 현대 디자인 작업을 위해 사회적, 정신적 분석을 그의 스타일에 포함시켰다. 매킨토시 작품들은 장식과 구조적 측면이 미묘한 조화 속에 있는 탁월한 균형감을 보여준다. 그는 장식적 단순성을 인지한 최초의 인물 중의 한사람이었으며, 그의 작품속의 자연의 가능성은 오늘날까지도 신선하고 독창성을 유지하고 있다.
