This paper studies Japan's propaganda and the representation of colonial Korea after the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty in 1910, focusing on the media. It focuses on the period of military rule in the 1910s, when Japan, which had taken away Korea's sovereignty through the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty, suppressed Koreans by force and used the media to justify the annexation and build a positive image.
After the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty was signed on August 29, 1910, Japan purchased the Daehan Maeil Shinmun and published it under a new title, Maeil Shinbo, on August 30, 1910. After the Japan-Korea Annexation Treaty, Japan controlled the media in order to control the public, closed down all newspapers except Maeil Shinbo, the organ of the Government-General of Korea, and strengthened its media propaganda campaign to represent Japan's position through the organ. The paper analyzes the process of constructing images of the ‘Japanese colonial assimilation theory’ for the solidification of Japanese colonial rule during the military rule period, focusing on cartoons and illustrations in the <Maeil Shinbo>, the only Korean-language newspaper of the Governor-General at the time. For the direction and core research of the study, visual images were collected and analyzed from three major aspects. First, visual images as a representation of Koreans by the Japanese Empire as “barbaric and uncivilized pre-modern Korea.” Second, visual images that propagandized “developing Korea” as the legitimacy of Japan’s colonial rule. Third, visual images containing Japan’s East Asian solidarity theory and the otherized Korea during World War I. “Maeil Shinbo” carried out a propaganda campaign that instilled the policy keynote of the Governor-General that Koreans were helpless, indolent, and regressive, and that Korean society as a whole was stuck in the pre-modern realm and needed to be developed and enlightened. In order to legitimize the colonial power, Japan constructed an image of a civilized country that stood shoulder to shoulder with Western powers. To this end, various images such as illustrations, cartoons, illustrations, and photographs were used to attempt mass propaganda. These visual images were propaganda activities that set up Joseon as an other country that Japan had to civilize, justified Japan's colonial rule, and were a policy activity to internalize colonial rule among the Joseon people.
