미국 대학 의사소통 교육의 영속과 변천 : 레토릭, 오라토리, 스피치와 스피치 커뮤니케이션에서 커뮤니케이션학으로 = The Permanence and Transformation of U.S. College Communication Education: From Rhetoric, Oratory, and Elocution, to Speech, to Speech Communication, and to Communication Studies

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 글은 18~19세기 근대 미국 대학에서 의사소통 교육이 레토릭, 오라토리와 엘로쿠션으로 소개되고, 20세기 초반에는 스피치로, 20세기 후반에는스피치에서 스피치 커뮤니케이션으로, 21세기에는 스피치 커뮤니케이션에서 커뮤니케이션으로 학문의 명칭이 변화하는 과정을 살펴보면서 현대 커뮤니케이션 학문의 정체성을 이해하고 교양교육으로서 혹은 전공 과정으로서 그 필요성과 중요성을 인식하는 것을 목적으로 한다. 첫째, 미국 독립 전후인 18세기 중반부터 대중교육이 획기적으로 확산하기 이전 1900년대까지 로마의 오라토리와 영국의 엘로쿠션 전통이 미국 대학의 의사소통 교육에 천착하고 전개되는 과정을 살펴보며, 이러한 교육이 초기 미국식 민주주의와 어떤 관련을 맺고 있는가를 논의한다. 둘째, 19세기 후반, 루이지애나령 매입 이후 영토 확장, 새로운 이민자의 급속한 증가, 자본주의와 산업화로 인해 대중사회 출현에 맞추어 레토릭 교육이 변화하는 과정을 살핀다. 셋째, 20세기 들어와 스피치 교육이 퍼브릭스피킹을 앞세우며 대학이 소수 엘리트 교육에서 일반 대중을 대상으로 전환하는 과정을 검토하고 스피치의자유를 통한 시민의 권리 교육이 어떻게 이루어졌는가를 논의한다. 넷째, 제2차 세계대전 이후, 정치 ․ 사회적 배경을 검토하며 사회과학 방법론인 정량적, 경험적, 실험적 커뮤니케이션 연구자들이 증가함에 따라 스피치라는 개념에서 스피치 커뮤니케이션으로 변하며, 학문적 관심사와 분절화가 어떻게 진행되는가를 탐구한다. 다섯째, 21세기 들어와 학문의 명칭을 스피치 커뮤니케이션에서 커뮤니케이션이라고 개정하며 대인 커뮤니케이션, 소그룹커뮤니케이션, 조직 커뮤니케이션, 문화간 커뮤니케이션, 비언어 커뮤니케이션, 비즈니스 커뮤니케이션 등의 분야로 확산하면서 다른 학문과의 융합과 공생을 하는 과정을 탐색한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper explores the change and continuity of communications education in contemporary American universities. Early American communication education began in the 18th and 19th centuries with the words of rhetoric, oratory, and elocution. These words were transformed into speech in the early 20th century, from speech to speech communication in the late 20th century, and from speech communication to the study of communication in the 21st century. First, this paper examines how the Roman oratory and the British elocution tradition developed in communication education in American universities from the mid-18th century, before and after American independence, to the 1900’s, before popular education spread dramatically. It also discusses how it relates to early American-style democracy. Second, it looks at the process of changing rhetoric education according to the emergence of mass society following territorial expansion after the Louisiana Purchase in the late 19th century, the rapid increase in new immigrants, and capitalism and industrialization. Third, in the 20th century, speech education put ‘public speaking’ at the forefront, reviewing the process of universities shifting from a minority elite education to the general public, and discussing how civil rights education through freedom of speech was achieved.
Fourth, it examines the political and social background after World War II and explores the change from the concept of speech to speech communication as researchers of quantitative, empirical, and experimental communication, which are social science methodologies, increase. And it investigates academic interests and how segmentation progresses in the field of communication.
Fifth, in the 21st century, the name of the study was revised from speech communication to communication studies, and the process of spreading to the fields of interpersonal communication, small group communication, organizational communication, intercultural communication, nonverbal communication, and business communication is examined. It also explores convergent and symbiotic relationship between these communication studies and other studies.
