염상섭 『불연속선(不連續線)』 연구 = A Study on Yoem Sang-seop`s 『Bulyeonsokseon』 (Line of Discontinuity)

This is the attempt to pay attention to 『Bulyeonsokseon』(Line of Discontinuity), Yoem Sang-seop``s last novel published in the colonial period. Yoem Sang-seop had continuously raised the presence of a sympathizer and free love, problem of capital in his works. Regarding Yoem Sang-seop``s novel published in the colonial period as one consistent world, this paper examined in which way Yoem Sang-seop``s critical mind is finished in 『Bulyeonsokseon』(Line of Discontinuity). First, free love was described negatively or remained as unfinished in most of previous works. 『Bulyeonsokseon』(Line of Discontinuity) shows the aspect that the writer``s critical mind and critical consciousness on free love are maintained but the fact that Song Gyeong-hui and Kim Jin-soo are bound beyond materials or past is the feature distinguished from previous works. The contemporary needs trying to find modern self through free love made some achievements in 『Bulyeonsokseon』(Line of Discontinuity). On the other hand, socialism is put in jail again in 『Bulyeonsokseon』 (Line of Discontinuity) and revealed only through Gyeong-hui``s recollection. However, this aspect needs to be understood with the historical background of the times when craze for socialism arrest was strong. Finally, Yoem Sang-seop continuously describes the economic vulnerability of colonial Joseon through 『Bulyeonsokseon』(Line of Discontinuity) and looks at philistinism or pariah capitalism critically. However, it is noteworthy that investment based on modern rationality is shown through Song Gyeong-hui or Kim Jin-soo or Song Gyeong-hui sticks to the attitude as a resident to the end without being seduced by vain materials. Putting the discussion so far together, discussion in the meantime that regarded 『Bulyeonsokseon』(Line of Discontinuity) as a simple popular novel has the potential for reconsideration.
