This study analyzes the formative characteristics and expressive techniques of artworks that achieve visual illusions through different intrinsic characteristics of natural water and light. Its purpose is to examine physical and philosophical perspectives on nature and the history of its representation, while suggesting new methods of representing nature based on an analysis of the organic forms produced through layering.
After observing the ways in which modern individuals seek out nature for reasons such as rest, exercise, and recreation, the researcher began applying the principle of “resemblance” to represent nature as something that she had considered before as a member of modern society to represent “rest.” Over time, her process has become one of expressing the characteristics of nature as a matter of “similitude.” Modern society, which has been referred to as “pluralistic,” focuses less than on “superiority” than on “everyone,” adopting a horizontal framework in which all are “superior.” Accordingly, the researcher’s focus in representing nature is on similitude rather than resemblance.
In his Physics, Aristotle (384–322 BCE) defined the concept of nature in terms of the relationships among living things and natural forms and substances, hypothetical necessity, movement, and change. According to him, the entities that have come to exist naturally move toward their existential goals, and the principle of movement is located within objects, constituting the essence and nature. Through this Aristotelian concept of nature, the principle of nature is shown to be inherent to the examined artwork. Moreover, the manifold transformations in the means of representing nature are understood through the history of such representations, which have appeared repeatedly in art history, while the question of what position the researcher’s own work occupies within that is also analyzed. The researcher’s artwork is similar to Romantic painting in its approach of evoking an emotional response through nature and to Impressionist painting in its methods of capturing momentary impressions of nature to express the sense of color and light. These have been visualized through plastic-based materials and installed in different ways to suit the characteristics of the exhibition setting.
In the modern era, nature was approached in a scientific manner, and the methods of representing nature became more diverse as new technologies developed. The artist uses artificial materials in her work to capture the properties of nature and create visual illusions, while also researching contemporary artists whose work bears connections with this. Olafur Eliasson (b. 1967) has arranged artificially created elements of nature within “white cubes” and presented them in urban settings, dismantling the boundary between natural and artificial as he has made it possible to experience nature through technology. James Turrell (b. 1943) has incorporated artificial light and elements of nature into his work to provide an experience that is preternatural and mysterious. Both artists have sought the significance of art by representing their interest in nature in new ways.
Based on this research, the researcher analyzes the characteristics of nature as observed in the examined artworks while attempting to suggest new ways of experiencing nature through art. In addition to identifying and reflecting characteristics of the ambiguous and organic in nature, including phenomena associated with water and light, she has explored different materials and techniques to represent these characteristics artistically. Through works that evoke unrealistic and fantastical visual illusions, she seeks to create an experience with the essence of nature.
In this study, the researcher has attempted to discover new ways of expressing nature through the representational techniques of visual illusion. Art must function to arouse feelings in the viewer through its new forms of stimulation and sensory experience, and the artist has continued working to create art that is mysterious and affords an experience of stimulating the unconscious.
