The Hellenists and Hebrews which first appear in Acts 6:1-7 refer to Greek- and Aramaic-speaking Jews and Jewish Christians, respectively. The early church was formed around Hebrew-speaking Jews who spoke Aramaic as their mother tongue. Soon after, the gospel of Jesus Christ was introduced to Greek-speaking Jews as well, and as a result, Greek-speaking Jewish Christians came to be. As many disciples joined the church in Jerusalem, the economically weak Hellenistic widows were marginalized from ‘daily relief’, which caused the Hellenists to resent the Hebrews. Why did this happen despite the leadership of the Twelve Apostles? Various interpretations are suggested, such as alienation from the Hebrews" oversight of relief projects, discrimination against non-Jewish Greek widows, reverse discrimination based on economic wealth, and discrimination based on theological differences. It is still not clear why this happens only to the widows among the Hellenists.
According to Luke"s report, in order to solve the problem of relief, the twelve apostles appointed seven leaders among the Hellenists. But the ‘Seven’ was actually elected to lead the independent Hellenistic community capable of worship and godly life conducted in Greek. In other words, the appointment of the ‘Seven’ was actually a process carried out on its own within the Hellenistic community, regardless of the ‘Twelve’. Therefore, the alienation of the Hellenistic widows from daily relief was also an event within the Hellenistic community, and not a direct cause of the formation of an independent Hellenistic community, but rather a result of such independent community formation. Then, the fundamentally important question is, ‘What is the actual cause of the formation of an independent Greek community apart from the Hebrews, and can any other decisive differences be conceivable other than the difference in language?’ Many commentators have noted that differences in language and the sociocultural backgrounds and ways of thinking that inevitably accompany them can lead to theological differences (e.g. attitudes toward the law or the temple), which was an important opportunity to solidify their identity along with the establishment of seven leaders.
Taken together, we identify three things by reconstructing the events of 6:1-7. First, the Hellenists, who came to the Christian faith through the missionary activities of the Hebrews, formed an independent Christian community due to differences in language and accompanying ideological and theological differences in the early years. Second, the gap between Luke"s report and the actual reconstructed event is explained by Luke"s tendency to emphasize the unity and harmony of the early church. Third, the early appearance of the Jerusalem church revealed in the incident of 6:1-7 is ‘coexistence based on diversity’, which gives us an important lesson today.
