New educational changes are forecasted to come to Korea reflecting the wide use of computers and the utilization of telecommunication. It is necessary to discuss how the current trends in technology will effect geography courses in Korean schools. However, because geography courses are very sensitive to the requirements for the national entrance examination, it is difficult to predict the changes in courses in the future. Therefore, it is very useful to look outside of Korea and see how other countries have assimilated technology into course work. For this paper, Germany was selected as the subject country. This study involves a description of the computer, software and telecommunication utilization for geography courses in Germany. In order to understand the trend in Germany, the contents of the magazine $quot;Praxis Geography$quot; were reviewed. ($quot;Praxis Geography$quot; is a popular professional magazine for the teaching and study of geography in Germany.)
A review of the magazine's contents for the last five years indicates that regional studies and systematic geography are strongly linked. A monthly theme about computer-software for geography courses was covered in volume 3/1995. In this volume, the spread and utilization of computers in German schools was discussed. Also included in this volume were a geography syllabus that integrated computers, software for geography classes, methods of networking, trends of teaching geography and some critical analysis of courses.
In this paper a few software products which are popular for geography courses in Germany such as Wega, HIima, Hunger in Afrika, IDRISI, MOBIT, RUDI-RUHR, SimCity, were briefly introduced.
According to the magazines it is necessary to promote the widespread use of computers in schools and to invest in the development of adequate software, in order to complete geogprahical courses in Germany; it is also very important to study the negative effects in rapidly changing the educational environment by introducing computers into geography courses.
